OVA
Description
Botan guides souls to the Spirit World for judgment as one of many grim reapers, defying traditional depictions with her youthful cheerfulness. She sports long cyan hair—blonde on manga tankōbon covers—typically tied in a ponytail, with rose-pink or purple eyes appearing blue in manga. On duty, she dons a light-pink kimono with a white obi sash, switching to human attire like school uniforms or biker outfits in the human world. Her personality blends bubbly optimism and helpfulness with clumsiness, forgetfulness, and occasional cowardice.

Initially intrigued by Yusuke Urameshi, she becomes his trusted ally and close friend, extending bonds to his allies like Kazuma Kuwabara, sharing deep emotional connections. After Yusuke’s resurrection as Spirit Detective, Koenma assigns her as his assistant: she delivers missions, trains him on Spirit World tools like the Psychic Spyglass and Demon Compass, and relays messages. She aids during the Makai insect infestation by destroying insects, protecting Keiko Yukimura, and clarifying her non-romantic relationship with Yusuke. In the Dark Tournament, she reveals Yusuke’s Spirit Detective identity to Keiko and Shizuru, coaches Team Urameshi, and ferries Genkai’s soul post-mortem.

During the Chapter Black Saga, she briefs Yusuke on new threats before his kidnapping, assists his rescue, and has her soul captured after violating a taboo in Kaito’s territory—freed after Kaito’s defeat. She later saves Seaman from Sniper’s attack. For the Three Kings Saga, she accompanies Koenma to observe the Demon World Tournament. In the 2018 OVA "All or Nothing," terrorists hold her hostage with Koenma at the Gate of Judgment; Yusuke mobilizes allies to rescue them, leveraging Kuwabara’s Dimension Sword. The earlier OVA "Two Shots" lacks her prominent involvement. The live-action adaptation includes her, though summaries detail only her introductory role.

A notable trivia: Creator Yoshihiro Togashi accidentally drew her with two left hands on a 1991 manga cover, later referenced when Yusuke warns her to "be careful with the right hand." Her name means "peony," and her oar-based transportation alludes to "Botman" without the "m."
