Description
Genma Saotome is the father of Ranma Saotome and the founder of the Saotome School of Anything-Goes Martial Arts. He is a middle-aged man, usually seen wearing a traditional white martial arts gi, a pair of glasses, and a white bandana wrapped around his head. Though he was not bald in his youth, he is now completely hairless on top, a condition about which he harbors a significant insecurity.

Genma’s most defining physical characteristic is his curse. During a training journey in China at the legendary training ground of Jusenkyo, he fell into the Spring of Drowned Panda, also known as the Panda Spring. As a result, whenever he is splashed with cold water, he transforms into a large, anthropomorphic giant panda. Exposure to hot water reverses the transformation and returns him to his human form. Unlike his son, Genma seems to have little trouble with this curse and frequently uses his panda form to his advantage. In this form, he cannot speak but communicates by writing on wooden signs that he produces from nowhere, often using them to express his thoughts or to flee from responsibility. He appears to enjoy being a panda, as the form allows him to eat bamboo leaves with great pleasure, escape uncomfortable questions, and generally avoid difficult situations. When his wife Nodoka visits, he stays in his panda form and goes by the name Mr. Panda, pretending to be the pet of Ranma’s female alias, Ranko.

In terms of personality, Genma is irresponsible, selfish, and cowardly. He frequently preaches the virtues of martial arts honor and discipline to his son, but he rarely practices what he preaches. His primary concerns are his own comfort, especially his love of food. He has been known to trade his son for meals, sell him for a bowl of ramen, or abandon him for the promise of food. When cornered or confronted with the consequences of his actions, his favorite technique is to use a ridiculous groveling maneuver called the Crouch of the Wild Tiger, also known as the Fierce Tiger Descending Mountain technique, which involves him throwing himself on the ground and begging for forgiveness. He is notorious for using his son as collateral for dubious promises. For instance, he promised Ukyo Kuonji’s father that Ranma would marry her in exchange for an okonomiyaki cart, only to later flee with the cart and break the engagement. More than half of the conflicts and chaotic situations in the story can be traced back to Genma’s past schemes and empty promises.

Despite his many flaws, Genma is an accomplished and exceptionally skilled martial artist. He was a student of the ancient and perverted grandmaster Happosai, alongside his close friend and fellow student, Soun Tendo. Together, they eventually sealed Happosai in a cave to escape his abusive training methods. As the founder of the Saotome School of Anything-Goes Martial Arts, Genma is the creator of several powerful and forbidden techniques. He is the master of two secret fighting styles: the Yamasenken, or Mountain of a Thousand Fists, which is a violent, burglary-based style focused on overwhelming frontal assault, and the Umisenken, or Sea of a Thousand Fists, a stealth-based style focused on concealment and theft. He deemed these techniques too dangerous and dishonorable and chose to seal them away. He also possesses a powerful grappling move known as the Cradle from Hell, which remains one of the few techniques that can still defeat his son. Though he usually appears lazy, his physical strength, speed, and agility are formidable, and he can even manifest a giant battle aura similar to Happosai’s, though he can only maintain it for a very short time. Akane Tendo once commented that, despite everything, Genma is genuinely very strong.

Genma’s primary motivation throughout the story is to fulfill an old promise. He and Soun Tendo made a pact to unite their families through marriage, ensuring the future of their martial arts school. After arriving at the Tendo Dojo, he pushes for Ranma to marry Soun’s youngest daughter, Akane, hoping to secure a comfortable life for himself as a freeloader. He lives as a permanent house guest at the Tendo Dojo, spending most of his time playing board games like Go and shogi with Soun rather than working. For a brief period, he worked as an assistant at Dr. Tofu Ono’s clinic.

A key driver of his past actions is a vow he made to his wife, Nodoka Saotome. He promised to raise Ranma to be a man among men, and if he failed, both he and Ranma would be required to commit seppuku, or ritual suicide. This promise is the reason he took Ranma on a decade-long training trip. He deeply fears Nodoka’s reaction and her strict adherence to the contract, which is why he hides from her in his panda form and has never returned home.

His relationship with his son, Ranma, is complex and contentious. Ranma frequently calls him an old man or a damned father, and the two constantly bicker, fight, and cheat each other, especially when it comes to food. However, despite Genma’s selfishness, he has dedicated over a decade of his life to training Ranma, making him the powerful martial artist he is. There are rare moments that suggest a genuine, if hidden, paternal affection, such as when Genma covers his sleeping son with a blanket. His relationship with his old friend Soun Tendo is a strong bond of camaraderie, as the two share a long history of enduring Happosai’s torment together. They are frequent partners in scheming and entertainment, though Soun is occasionally shocked or angered by Genma’s more dishonorable actions.

Over the course of the story, Genma shows little significant character development. He remains a lazy, gluttonous, and cowardly figure who continues to create problems with his schemes. His primary role is that of a comedic foil and a catalyst for conflict, yet his underlying dedication to his son’s training and his genuine, if distorted, sense of obligation to his family provide moments of surprising depth. He ultimately serves as a source of both chaos and stability in the Anything-Goes Martial Arts world.
