Description
In a world where killing and torture have been made completely legal, a number of specialized companies offer these services to the public. The series centers on Spirytus, a rare firm in this industry that is considered a white company because it only accepts contracts to extract information from hardened criminals. The story follows the daily lives of four part-time employees who work within its walls, blending their gruesome duties with the familiar rhythms and camaraderie of any other workplace comedy.
The main cast is led by Sero, a skilled and sociable 25-year-old who found genuine purpose in the art of interrogation and whose favorite tool is the hammer. His senior colleague is Siu, a 29-year-old legend in the torture world known as Supernova, who speaks in a Kansai dialect and prefers using whips while raising his twin daughters as a single father. The newer hires include Mike, a 22-year-old aspiring novelist whose small and cute appearance belies his sharp instincts, and Hugh, a 20-year-old university student who is so inhumanely beautiful that he hides his face behind a scarf and suffers from a phobia of blood, forcing him to master non-bleeding techniques like water torture.
Over the course of the 12-episode season, the narrative balances episodic workplace hijinks with developing character arcs. Early episodes focus on the odd-couple dynamics as the experienced Sero and Siu train the quirky newcomers, teaching them how to leverage their unique traits, such as Hugh’s beauty or Mike’s psychological insights, as effective tools. A notable arc involves the workplace manager Noe, who despises Sero because he cannot perform torture himself, leading to friction that eventually reveals Noe was taken in by the cross-dressing president Hela. The story also expands to the characters' private lives, such as when Sero is forced to care for Siu and his sick daughters, or when Sero's younger brother Luc grows concerned about his sibling's violent career choice. As the series progresses, seemingly mundane problems like a suspected office ghost or the need to write a university report become entangled with the dangerous reality of their profession, culminating in a final episode that flashes back to the darker, more brutal origins of Spirytus before it became a white company.
