Description
Portgas D. Ace, born Gol D. Ace, was the son of the Pirate King Gol D. Roger and Portgas D. Rouge. To shield Ace from the World Government, Rouge prolonged her pregnancy to 20 months using sheer willpower, giving birth on Baterilla before passing away. Marine Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp entrusted Ace to mountain bandit Curly Dadan on Dawn Island. Growing up surrounded by hatred directed at Roger's potential children, Ace questioned his right to live. Garp counseled him that only by living could he find his answer.

Initially cold and aggressive, Ace repeatedly attacked his foster brother Monkey D. Luffy to drive him away, but Luffy persisted. A pivotal moment came when the Bluejam Pirates' Porchemy captured Luffy; Luffy endured torture without betraying Ace's location. This act forged an unbreakable bond. Alongside their other sworn brother Sabo, the trio performed a sakazuki ceremony, pledging brotherhood. They shared pirate dreams, often dined-and-dashed, and trained together in Dawn Island's forests. Sabo's apparent death at the hands of a World Noble devastated Ace, strengthening his vow to live without regrets and protect Luffy.

Setting sail at seventeen, Ace formed the Spade Pirates after shipwrecking on Sixis. There, he encountered Masked Deuce and unintentionally consumed the Mera Mera no Mi, a Logia Devil Fruit granting fire manipulation, earning him the epithet "Fire Fist." His crew grew to twenty, gaining notoriety and leading to clashes with Marine Ensign Isuka, whom Ace once saved despite her pursuit. Reaching Sabaody Archipelago, Ace attempted to assassinate Whitebeard Pirate captain Edward Newgate, failed, and was instead recruited into the crew. Rising to commander of the 2nd Division, Ace embraced Whitebeard as his true father, tattooing the crew's jolly roger on his back with pride. During this time, he mastered all three Haki types: Conqueror's Haki emerged unconsciously during the Grey Terminal fire; Armament Haki was honed on Sabaody; Observation Haki developed in the New World.

Ace pursued Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) after Teach murdered crewmate Thatch. Their duel on Banaro Island ended in Ace's defeat when Teach's Yami Yami no Mi negated his fire abilities. Captured and handed to the World Government, Ace's scheduled public execution at Marineford, due to his Roger lineage, ignited the Summit War. Though rescued by Luffy and the Whitebeard Pirates, Ace sacrificed himself to shield Luffy from Admiral Akainu's magma fist, suffering a fatal chest wound. His final words expressed gratitude for the love he found and regret at not seeing Luffy achieve his dream.

Ace's death profoundly altered the series' course. It motivated Luffy's two-year intensive training, chronicled in "One Piece 3D2Y," where flashbacks of their childhood vows underscored Ace's lasting influence. Sabo inherited the Mera Mera no Mi, carrying Ace's will forward. His legacy also shaped events in Wano Country through connections formed with figures like Yamato and Otama during his travels. Physically, Ace was marked by black hair, freckles, and distinct tattoos: the crossed-out "ASCE" on his left bicep honored Sabo; the Whitebeard insignia on his back symbolized his chosen family. He typically wore an orange hat with beads and smileys, black shorts, a leg pouch, and often went shirtless to display his tattoos.
