Uryū Ishida is a Quincy from Karakura Town, the son of Ryūken Ishida and Kanae Katagiri. His father was initially betrothed to another Quincy, Masaki Kurosaki, but ultimately married Kanae, a family maid. On the day Masaki died, Uryū’s mother fell unconscious and passed away three months later after Yhwach’s Auswählen technique stripped her of her Quincy powers.
As a child, Uryū trained under his grandfather, Sōken Ishida, who instructed him in the Quincy arts. His father, Ryūken, showed little interest in their heritage, focusing instead on his medical career and creating tension between them. This rift deepened when Uryū witnessed his father performing an autopsy on his mother’s body, leading him to swear he would never become a doctor. After Sōken was killed by Hollows without Shinigami aid, Uryū developed a profound hatred for Shinigami.
In high school, Uryū was quiet and kept to himself. He belonged to the handicrafts club and was an accomplished seamster, often incorporating unconventional designs into garments he repaired or created for others. He has low blood pressure, dislikes procrastination, and holds peculiar aversions—such as to buttons and the word “haphazard.” His preferred dish is homemade mackerel miso stew.
Uryū’s first meeting with Ichigo Kurosaki was confrontational. He lured Hollows using bait and challenged Ichigo to a competition, hoping to demonstrate Quincy superiority over Shinigami. They eventually joined forces to battle a Menos Grande, forging a mutual respect and the foundations of an alliance.
He adhered to a code called the “Pride of the Quincy,” centered on justice and safeguarding others. Uryū often acted chivalrously, defending women from harm—such as protecting Rukia Kuchiki from Renji and Byakuya, and Orihime Inoue from various dangers. Though he initially despised Shinigami, he gradually cooperated with those aligned with Ichigo and set aside much of his resentment.
Uryū took part in the mission to Soul Society to rescue Rukia from execution, shielding Orihime during their travels. He battled Mayuri Kurotsuchi, who exposed the Shinigami’s role in the Quincy genocide. Despite his animosity, Uryū spared Mayuri’s subordinate, Nemu, and accepted her antidote for his poisoning.
When Orihime was abducted by Arrancar, Uryū broke his promise to his father not to associate with Shinigami and joined Ichigo and Yasutora Sado to save her. In Hueco Mundo, he aided Renji Abarai against Szayelaporro Granz and later helped subdue Ichigo’s Hollowfied state during the fight with Ulquiorra Cifer.
After Ichigo lost his powers, Uryū accepted Kisuke Urahara’s request to help defend Karakura Town. He later became student council president, protecting Ichigo from bullies and looking into strange attacks on their friends.
During the Thousand-Year Blood War, Uryū joined the Wandenreich, the Quincy army under Yhwach, who named him his successor with the designation “A” for “Antithesis.” While seemingly a traitor, his true aim was to infiltrate and avenge his mother by killing Yhwach from within.
He participated in the invasion of Soul Society and the Soul King’s palace, fighting former allies like Ichigo and Renji while avoiding lethal force and working covertly to protect them. He destroyed Kamikake, the barrier binding the Soul King, momentarily disrupting the balance between worlds.
Uryū’s Schrift, “The Antithesis,” enabled him to reverse events between two targets—such as exchanging wounds or conditions. He used this power in his fight against Jugram Haschwalth, Yhwach’s second-in-command, whose own Schrift, “The Balance,” redirected misfortune, pitting their abilities against one another.
After Haschwalth revealed truths about Yhwach’s power and Quincy history, Uryū pressed on with his covert mission. He received a special silver arrowhead from his father, crafted to negate Yhwach’s abilities temporarily. During the final battle, Uryū fired the arrow, enabling Ichigo to strike a decisive blow against Yhwach.
Following Yhwach’s defeat, Uryū became a doctor at Karakura Hospital, following his father’s path. He continued his duties as a Quincy, protecting others from Hollows, and maintained friendships with Ichigo and their companions, occasionally spending time with them despite a demanding schedule.
Over time, Uryū evolved from a resentful Quincy eager to prove his worth into a guardian who valued justice and friendship above factional ties. His actions were frequently guided by his grandfather’s desire for cooperation between Quincy and Shinigami and by his commitment to preventing innocent lives from being lost.
