Description
Usopp was born in Syrup Village to Yasopp, a pirate serving under "Red-Haired" Shanks, and Banchina. After Yasopp left for piracy, Usopp cared for his ill mother by inventing stories of pirate invasions to lift her spirits. When she died, he maintained this habit of lying, forming the "Usopp Pirates" with village children to entertain the bedridden heiress Kaya with fictional tales. His life shifted when Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates arrived. Usopp befriended them upon learning Luffy knew his father and aided in foiling Captain Kuro's assassination plot against Kaya. Despite the villagers' distrust due to his falsehoods, he protected them and joined Luffy's crew as sniper, departing on the ship Going Merry gifted by Kaya.
Usopp displays pervasive cowardice and compulsive lying, often fabricating excuses to evade danger or spinning grandiose tales about himself, rooted in insecurity over his physical strength compared to crewmates like Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji. Yet he reveals profound loyalty and compassion, repeatedly conquering fear to defend friends or strangers in crises. His emotional sensitivity triggers frequent tearful or angry outbursts under stress. A core aspect of his growth is his dream to become a "brave warrior of the sea," inspired by encounters with giants Dorry and Brogy, fueling his desire to visit Elbaf and embody their warrior ethos.
In combat, Usopp employs ingenuity and ranged tactics. He initially wielded a slingshot with specialized ammunition like explosives or fire stars, later integrating Dial artifacts from Skypiea for enhanced effects. After a two-year timeskip, he adopted plant-based "Pop Greens" from the Boin Archipelago. His fighting style merges precision sniping with psychological warfare, exploiting opponents' fears—as when he traumatized the officer Sugar into unconsciousness. During the Dressrosa conflict, he awakened Observation Haki to sense distant auras. Beyond battle, he serves as the crew’s chief inventor and artist, creating Nami’s Clima-Tact and designing the Straw Hats’ jolly roger emblem.
In "One Piece 3D: Straw Hat Chase," Usopp appears during the crew’s nighttime voyage on the Thousand Sunny. He wakes to use the restroom, spots a bird near the ship’s door, but dismisses it. The next day, after Luffy’s straw hat vanishes, Usopp recalls the bird and suggests it stole the hat. Searching with Chopper, he investigates a derelict ship and discovers the gravely ill pirate Schneider. They transport Schneider to their submarine for treatment. When a giant bird lands holding Luffy’s hat, Usopp alerts the crew, sparking a pursuit through glaciers, Marine blockades, and sea kings. He participates in the chase, aiding in reclaiming the hat and reuniting Schneider with his companion Buzz—a dog transformed into the bird by the Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Eagle Devil Fruit.
For the film, Usopp wears his signature pre-timeskip night attire: a dark yellow kerchief and goggles. His actions reflect established traits—overlooking the bird illustrates occasional lapses in vigilance, while aiding Schneider and joining the chase demonstrates his underlying compassion and loyalty despite fear.
