TV Special
Description
Usopp, a resident of Syrup Village, is the son of Yasopp of the Red-Haired Pirates and Banchina, who died when he was young. His habit of spinning tales began as a childhood effort to cheer his ailing mother, continuing long after her passing. Leading the Usopp Pirates—a trio of village children—he staged mock adventures and issued false alarms about pirate invasions, though his reputation as a chronic liar led the townsfolk to dismiss his warnings.

The arrival of the Straw Hat Pirates upended his routine. When Captain Kuro’s scheme to murder his friend Kaya came to light, Usopp allied with Luffy’s crew to thwart the Black Cat Pirates. His actions earned him an invitation to join the Straw Hats as their sniper, fueled by his dream of emulating his father as a courageous sea warrior. His sharpshooting and knack for invention proved indispensable, from crafting Nami’s Clima-Tact to sustaining the Going Merry with repairs.

Tensions in Water 7 over decommissioning the damaged ship led Usopp to briefly abandon the crew. He returned disguised as Sogeking, aiding Nico Robin’s rescue at Enies Lobby while masking his identity out of shame—a conflict that underscored his battle with self-doubt and tentative steps toward bravery. After a two-year training hiatus, he emerged with enhanced combat skills, wielding plant-based Pop Greens from the Boin Archipelago and unlocking Observation Haki in Dressrosa, which let him detect distant auras.

In the TV special *Open Upon the Great Sea! A Father’s Huge, HUGE Dream!*, Usopp countered the hypnotic choir of antagonist Bayan by shooting sleep-inducing pellets into the singers’ throats, breaking their hold over Luffy and the crew. This showcased his tactical precision and adaptability.

Usopp’s journey intertwines fear and perseverance. His fabrications, once a shield against grief, evolve into a means of rallying allies and facing threats—mirroring his slow reconciliation of fantasy and truth. Though still quick to panic, his decisive actions—freeing Dressrosa’s enslaved toys, defying Skypiea’s tyranny, and supporting his crew in crises—mark his incremental growth toward the brave warrior he vows to become.
