Description
Usopp, born in Syrup Village, is the son of Yasopp, a pirate in Shanks' crew, and Banchina, who died from illness during his childhood. After his mother's death, he battled loneliness by inventing daily tales of pirate attacks and founding the "Usopp Pirates" with village children. These stories also cheered Kaya, a sickly heiress whose caretaker, Kuro, secretly conspired to seize her fortune. Usopp uncovered Kuro's plot, but villagers dismissed his warnings due to his history of lies. With help from the visiting Straw Hat Pirates, he stopped Kuro and joined their crew as sniper, leaving Syrup Village aboard the ship Kaya gifted them, the Going Merry.

Initially defined by cowardice and compulsive lying, Usopp often tried to escape danger through deception or pretending illness. Yet he consistently showed fierce loyalty when it mattered most. Overcoming his terror at Arlong Park, he defeated the fish-man Chew with clever tactics, strengthening his vow to become a "brave warrior of the sea." His inventive talent proved crucial, especially when he created the Clima-Tact weapon for Nami.

The Water 7 arc became a major turning point. Learning the Going Merry couldn't be repaired, Usopp's deep emotional bond with the ship—representing his sense of self-worth and belonging—led to a violent clash with Luffy. He left the crew temporarily but secretly aided them as "Sogeking," a masked sniper persona adopted during the Enies Lobby mission to rescue Nico Robin. This identity served as a psychological tool to access courage while hiding his true self. He reconciled after acknowledging shared grief over the Merry's loss and took part in its ceremonial burning.

After two years of training apart, Usopp returned stronger and equipped with "Pop Greens"—botanical ammunition from the Boin Archipelago that expanded his sniping options. Though still anxious, he displayed greater combat confidence, such as against the New Fish-Man Pirates. His Observation Haki awakened in Dressrosa, letting him pinpoint Sugar's location across great distance. Exploiting her fear of clowns with a projectile showing his shocked face, he freed thousands from her toy-controlling powers, earning the title "God" Usopp and a bounty increase to 200,000,000 berries.

Despite his growth, core vulnerabilities remain. He expressed terror facing emperors like Kaido and preferred stealth over open battle. Yet he repeatedly pushed past fear to protect allies, like defending the injured Kin'emon and Kiku in Wano while criticizing their readiness to die for honor. His bounty later rose to 500,000,000 berries after the Onigashima raid. Usopp still dreams of visiting Elbaf, inspired by the giants Dorry and Brogy, and ultimately surpassing his father as a sniper.
