Description
Monkey D. Luffy captains the Straw Hat Pirates, instantly recognized by his signature straw hat. He received this hat as a child in Foosha Village from the pirate Shanks, pledging to become a great pirate and return it one day. Accidentally eating the Gomu Gomu no Mi Devil Fruit granted Luffy a rubber-like body, making him unable to swim but providing elastic combat abilities like Gum-Gum Pistol.

Born in the Goa Kingdom, he is the grandson of Marine Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp and son of revolutionary leader Monkey D. Dragon. After Shanks left Foosha, Garp entrusted Luffy to mountain bandit Curly Dadan on Mt. Colubo. There, Luffy befriended Portgas D. Ace and Sabo, forming sworn brotherhoods and sharing pirate dreams until Sabo was believed killed by a World Noble. Luffy bears a scar under his left eye from stabbing himself as a child to prove his toughness to Shanks' crew, and a large X-shaped scar on his chest from the Summit War of Marineford. His typical attire is a red vest, light blue shorts, and sandals, with his straw hat secured by a string strap added during the Arabasta Arc.

Luffy began his piracy career at age 17, sailing from Foosha Village. His early exploits involved rescuing cabin boy Koby from the Alvida Pirates and recruiting swordsman Roronoa Zoro in Shells Town. His ultimate goal is to find the legendary treasure One Piece and become the Pirate King, defining this title as possessing ultimate freedom. He plans to recruit ten crew members before achieving this ambition.

During the events of *Jango's Dance Carnival*, Luffy and his crew (Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji) visit Mirror Ball Island for a dance festival. Marines identify him via his 30,000,000 Berry bounty poster, pursuing him alongside hypnotist pirate Jango. Jango hypnotizes the entire island using a giant disco ball, forcing everyone, including Luffy, into synchronized dancing that destroys the island. After the hypnosis ends, the Straw Hats escape on the Going Merry, accidentally leaving Luffy behind as he continues dancing with Jango on the disco ball wreckage. This short occurs between the Loguetown and Reverse Mountain Arcs, as the crew lacks later members and shows no awareness of the Grand Line. Luffy displays his usual carefree nature and vulnerability to unconventional threats like hypnosis, contrasting his physical combat prowess.

His rubber physiology grants immunity to blunt impacts and electricity but vulnerability to sharp objects. He uses elastic techniques for accelerated punches, kicks, and limb extensions. Post-timeskip, he mastered Haki abilities, though these are not present in the *Dance Carnival* short. Luffy embodies relentless optimism, fierce loyalty to his crew, and instinctive leadership. While often seeming naive, he shows perceptiveness in understanding others' core motivations, evident when recruiting crew members like Nami or Robin.
