TV Special
Description
Monkey D. Luffy commands the Straw Hat Pirates. Born on Dawn Island, he is the son of Revolutionary Army leader Monkey D. Dragon and grandson of Marine vice admiral Monkey D. Garp, marking him as part of the enigmatic Clan of D. His childhood unfolded largely under Garp and caretaker Curly Dadan's watch, forging sworn brotherhood bonds with Portgas D. Ace and Sabo. The defining influence came from pirate Shanks, who ignited Luffy's ambition to become Pirate King. Shanks lost an arm saving Luffy and entrusted him with his signature straw hat, a pledge for their reunion once Luffy achieved greatness. Accidentally consuming the Gum-Gum Fruit, later revealed as the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika, transformed Luffy's body into rubber and stripped his ability to swim. Centuries later, this Devil Fruit's awakening heralded him as Joy Boy's successor and the Sun God Nika incarnate.

Luffy possesses shaggy black hair, round black eyes, and a lean, muscular frame. He perpetually wears a yellow straw hat with a red hatband. A self-inflicted scar beneath his left eye, earned as a child proving bravery to Shanks' crew, and a large X-shaped scar across his chest from the Summit War of Marineford mark his features. His typical outfit is a red vest, light blue denim shorts, and sandals, though he adjusts attire for environments like cold-weather parkas or desert robes. The straw hat remains his constant companion, later fitted with a string strap for security in battle.

His personality blends fearless self-belief, startling naivete, and sharp perception of others' weaknesses. He embodies extremes: greedy for food and adventure yet profoundly selfless in defending friends, crew, or family. He scorns cowardice and betrayal but honors perseverance against the odds. Childlike wonder fuels fascination with simple concepts and creatures, often causing him to misidentify hybrid animals by minor features. Romantic advances, like those from Boa Hancock, leave him indifferent. Loyalty to his crew is absolute, driving him to defy the World Government, Marines, or emperors for their sake. Brother Ace's death plunged him into catatonia, then rage and self-doubt, before crew solidarity forged his recovery.

Combat prowess flows from his Devil Fruit, granting rubber-like properties, immunity to blunt force and electricity, but vulnerability to piercing attacks. He wields this elasticity creatively for techniques like Gum-Gum Pistol. Advanced transformations evolved: Gear Two boosts speed through heightened blood flow; Gear Three inflates bones for massive strength; Gear Four merges Haki mastery with muscle inflation. His Nika awakening unlocks Gear Five, marked by white hair, cartoonish physics, environmental rubberization, and size manipulation. This form embodies liberation myths yet risks mental subsumption by the fruit's will. He also masters all three Haki types—Observation, Armament, and Conqueror's—trained by Silvers Rayleigh.

In the Episode of Merry special, Luffy appears during flashbacks to the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs. His decision to retire the damaged Going Merry sparks a duel with Usopp, leading to Usopp's temporary departure. He spearheads the assault on Enies Lobby to liberate Nico Robin after CP9 captures her. Declaring war on the World Government, he rejects her sacrificial protection, demanding, "I don't want your protection if it means you die!" The special concludes with his participation in the Going Merry's Viking funeral, honoring the ship as a beloved crewmate.

Luffy's actions yield soaring bounties, reaching 3,000,000,000 berries after defeating Emperor Kaido. His heritage, Devil Fruit awakening, and triumphs position him among the Four Emperors, reshaping global power dynamics. He consistently rallies allies across nations, revolutionary factions, and pirate crews, uniting them into the 5,600-strong Straw Hat Grand Fleet.
