TV Special
Description
Monkey D. Luffy participates in the International Gourmet Organization's Food Tournament featured in the "Dream 9 Toriko & One Piece & Dragon Ball Z Super Collaboration Special," racing across an island for the prize of rare Carat Sizzled Cattle meat. He enters alongside his Straw Hat Pirates crewmates Sanji, Chopper, Nami, Franky, Brook, Zoro, and Robin, who observes from the audience. During the race, a giant Konnanoarijigoku insect obstacle eliminates most participants, leaving Luffy and his allies among the final contenders.
At a crossroads, the group splits into three paths: mountain, desert, and forest. Luffy chooses the challenging mountain route alongside Toriko and Goku. Goku briefly departs to handle a space creature summoned by King Kai but returns. Elsewhere, Zoro becomes lost, encountering Vegeta and Zebra and sparking an unrelated conflict. Luffy, Toriko, and Goku reach the finish line simultaneously, triggering a three-way battle. Mr. Satan accidentally enters the arena during the fight. The battle damages most of the arena, leaving only Satan within bounds, making him the technical winner. Satan shares the prize meat with all participants.
Later, during the celebratory banquet, the Deep Sea Glutton Akami attacks, stealing energy from Usopp, Satan, and Gohan. Akami evolves by draining energy from additional fighters, including Sanji, Brook, Franky, Piccolo, and Gotenks. Luffy, Toriko, and Goku confront Akami, but their attacks are absorbed. Goku charges a Spirit Bomb while Luffy and Toriko distract Akami. Goku requests energy from the tournament attendees to strengthen the attack. Luffy contributes his Elephant Gatling alongside Toriko's Twin Kugi Punch and Goku's Kamehameha and Spirit Bomb, defeating Akami. The group holds a banquet featuring Akami meat while unresolved fights continue elsewhere on the island.
Within this crossover event, Luffy's personality reflects his main series portrayal: impulsive and enthusiastic about challenges, especially those involving food or combat. He uses his signature stretching abilities from the Gum-Gum Fruit (later revealed to be the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika) during the battles. He demonstrates camaraderie with Goku and Toriko, expressing admiration for their fighting skills during the Akami confrontation. The special depicts Luffy's involvement solely within the tournament and Akami battle events.
