Description
"Ayakashi" is a supernatural anime series divided into three distinct story arcs, each based on traditional Japanese ghost stories and folklore. The first arc, "Yotsuya Kaidan," adapts the classic tale of betrayal and revenge. It centers on Oiwa, a woman betrayed by her husband, Iemon, who conspires with a wealthy family to poison her. After her death, Oiwa's spirit returns to haunt Iemon, driving him to madness and eventual demise. The arc explores themes of vengeance, guilt, and the consequences of betrayal, with a focus on the psychological unraveling of Iemon as he is tormented by Oiwa's ghost.

The second arc, "Tenshu Monogatari," shifts to a romantic and tragic narrative set in a feudal castle. It follows Zushonosuke, a wandering samurai, who encounters a mysterious woman named Tomihime, the daughter of a serpent god. Their forbidden love blossoms within the castle, but their relationship is doomed by the supernatural forces surrounding Tomihime and the societal constraints of their time. The arc delves into themes of love, sacrifice, and the clash between human and supernatural worlds, culminating in a poignant and bittersweet conclusion.

The final arc, "Bakeneko," serves as a precursor to the "Mononoke" series and introduces the Medicine Seller, a enigmatic figure who exorcises malevolent spirits known as mononoke. The story revolves around a wealthy family plagued by a series of mysterious deaths. The Medicine Seller investigates the household and uncovers a dark secret tied to a vengeful cat spirit, or bakeneko. Through his investigation, the arc explores themes of karma, retribution, and the hidden sins of the family, revealing the tragic origins of the curse.

Each arc is self-contained but connected by the overarching theme of supernatural phenomena and human emotions. The series is notable for its atmospheric storytelling, intricate character dynamics, and adherence to traditional Japanese folklore. The Medicine Seller, a recurring character in "Bakeneko," stands out as a central figure due to his unique role as a spiritual exorcist and his cryptic, almost otherworldly demeanor. The narrative structure, combined with the rich cultural backdrop, creates a compelling exploration of the interplay between the human and supernatural realms.

1Yotsuya Ghost Story - Part 1
The 18th-century kabuki playwright Nanboku Tsuruya IV introduces the episode as the narrator, stating his intent to write a truly terrifying ghost story. The setting shifts to a time of impoverished ronin, focusing on the samurai Iemon Tamiya. Iemon’s father-in-law, Samon, forces Iemon to separate from his wife, Oiwa, accusing Iemon of theft. Iemon kills Samon to remove this obstacle. Simultaneously, a servant named Naosuke murders Oiwa’s sister Osode’s lover, Yomoshichi Sato. Iemon and Naosuke meet at the scene, disguise both bodies as victims of robbery, and agree to conceal each other’s crimes. Iemon reunites with Oiwa, while Naosuke marries Osode under a false promise of avenging her father. Oiwa gives birth to a child, and Iemon grows resentful of their poverty and domestic life. Walking through town, Iemon exchanges a look of mutual interest with Oume, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Oume later tests a substance by dropping it into her family’s fish pond, killing the fish. Iemon’s servant delivers a gift from the Ito family to Oiwa: medicine meant to restore her health after childbirth. One of Iemon’s retainers prepares the medicine and brings it to Oiwa as the episode ends.
2Episode 2
The hunter reaches the floating castle and finds the princess who appeared to him earlier. She admits she is the white crane he was ordered to capture. She shows him the castle’s other inhabitants, all beings who severed ties with the human world. The hunter’s lord dispatches the hunter’s companion with a feathered robe meant to trap the crane. The companion ambushes the princess and wraps her in the robe, forcing her toward a partial transformation. The hunter seizes the robe and tears it apart, releasing her from the restraint. The castle immediately destabilizes, its foundations dissolving into mist. The princess reverts fully to crane form and flies away without looking back. The hunter remains on the ground, having abandoned his duty and lost both his quarry and any prospect of reward. His lord’s forces retreat from the forest empty-handed. The next episode begins the Yotsuya Kaidan arc with the return of a samurai whose past crimes resurface.
3Shinjitsu no Kage
Iemon administers a poison to Oiwa’s face that slowly disfigures her, concealing his intent under the guise of medicine. Takuetsu, Iemon’s servant, procures the poison and helps stage the deception. Oiwa’s skin begins to swell and distort, causing her physical pain and social withdrawal. She discovers a mirror and sees her transformed face, then finds the poison’s container, confirming Iemon’s betrayal. Confronting Iemon, she learns he has arranged her ruin to marry Oume, the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Oiwa dies from a combination of the poison’s effects and her own despair, but not before uttering a curse against Iemon. Immediately after her death, Iemon proceeds with wedding preparations, dismissing any guilt. During the wedding night, Oiwa’s ghost appears before Iemon, her disfigured face and vengeful presence disrupting the ceremony. The apparition drives Iemon into paranoia, causing him to turn violently on those around him. Oume’s father witnesses Iemon’s unraveling and withdraws his support, leaving Iemon isolated and haunted. Oiwa’s spirit continues to appear, eroding Iemon’s grasp on reality and setting the stage for his final descent into madness.
4Yotsuya Kaidan (4)
Iemon Tamiya suffers the final consequences of his crimes. Oiwa's ghost appears to him directly, driving him further into madness. His parents and his co-conspirators die one after another as the curse fulfills its course. In the episode's most visceral sequence, rats swarm and consume Iemon, delivering a grotesque death. Following his demise, the narrative shifts its perspective. The kabuki playwright Nanboku Tsuruya IV, who serves as the series' narrator, steps into the frame and directly addresses the concept of the curse. He explains that the ghost story's power does not originate from supernatural forces alone. Instead, the curse perpetuates itself through the audience's continued desire to hear and retell the tale. This meta-narrative twist reframes the preceding events as a self-fulfilling prophecy sustained by collective belief. The episode concludes the Yotsuya Kaidan arc by closing Iemon's story while simultaneously opening a philosophical reflection on the nature of horror itself. The next story arc, Tenshu Monogatari, begins in the following episode.

Yū and Aimu interrogate Kakuya,a subordinate of the entity called "He," seeking information about their enemy. Yōai and Ori'e arrive during the interrogation, followed by the sudden appearance of the red oni Aterui. Tengu and Akuro engage Aterui in battle. Amidst the fighting, an unseen attacker strikes Yū with an unknown force, causing him to lose consciousness. Yū awakens within a dreamlike space where a man in a wheelchair appears before him. The man questions Yū and attempts to convince him that "He" is not an enemy. The dream sequence blurs the line between reality and illusion, with Yōai's calls echoing from the waking world. Revelations emerge that Yū's Ayakashi power originated from snow that fell on a summer night, and that Izumi was also an Ayakashi user before her death. The episode establishes that Yū, Yōai, and Izumi likely all gained their powers from the same supernatural snow event. Yū demonstrates an abrupt ability to control his Ayakashi transformation voluntarily, a skill he previously lacked. The battle between Akuro, Tengu, and Aterui continues in the real world while Yū remains trapped in the dream, with the enigmatic "He" observing from an unknown location. The episode concludes without fully revealing "He's" identity or intentions, leaving Yū's confrontation with this antagonist unresolved.

7Episode 7
Zushonosuke returns to the burned castle tower and recovers Princess Tomi’s comb, the only remnant of her death in the fire. Lord Hikobe commands the reconstruction of the tower and orders Zushonosuke to supervise the labor. Zushonosuke refuses and instead begins building a small tower alone on the exact spot where the princess died. Villagers report seeing a woman’s silhouette among the construction beams at night, and Zushonosuke starts hearing Tomi’s voice giving him instructions. Lord Hikobe sends armed men to tear down the unauthorized structure, but the princess’s spirit manifests, throwing the soldiers into the river. Zushonosuke completes the tower, places the comb inside, and seals himself within. Tomi’s spirit appears before him, fully visible, and recounts that she perished not from the fire alone but from the grief of their forced separation. She explains that her lingering grudge anchored her spirit to the site. Zushonosuke chooses to remain inside the tower with her, abandoning the world of the living. The final scene shows the tower standing untouched as passersby avoid it, whispering of the ghost that dwells within.
8Episode 8
The lord’s army breaches the floating castle’s outer gates. Princess Tomi orders the remaining crane servants to flee while she confronts the intruders. Arikoto, the human warrior who swore loyalty to her, stands beside her despite the lord’s promise of reward for betraying the castle. The lord himself enters the main hall, demanding Tomi’s submission and the secret of the cranes’ immortality. Tomi reveals her true form as a white crane and ascends toward the sky, intending to carry the castle away from human reach. Arikoto grabs her leg, refusing to let her depart alone. The lord’s archers loose arrows; one strikes Arikoto, but he holds fast. Tomi transforms back, cradling Arikoto as the castle’s foundation collapses. The two fall together into the abyss as the entire structure disintegrates. The lord barely escapes, witnessing the destruction with no spoils gained. In the aftermath, only scattered rumors persist of a warrior who chose a crane spirit over worldly ambition. The next arc opens with a new set of characters entangled in a curse involving a vengeful cat spirit.
9Bakeneko - Part 1
A medicine peddler arrives at a samurai family's estate on the day their daughter is to marry. The servant Kayo explains the family sold the daughter's marriage to clear debts. The peddler senses a vengeful spirit,a bakeneko, within the household. The family members initially hide the truth behind the spirit's grudge. The spirit forces them to confront their shared secret through a series of disjointed visions. The family's denial crumbles when the bakeneko reveals the brutal death of a maid the family wronged. The peddler prepares to exorcise the spirit but requires the family's full acknowledgment of their guilt. They remain evasive, forcing the spirit to manifest the full memory of her abuse and murder. The episode ends with the bakeneko's rage intensifying as the peddler waits for the family to confess before he can act.
10Bakeneko: Ni no Maku
As the bride steps outside the house to depart, she collapses and dies instantly. Suspicion immediately falls on the medicine peddler, a stranger present at the residence, and the family’s retainers seize and bind him. An older retainer attempts to fetch a doctor but is killed by an unseen force before leaving the grounds. The medicine peddler breaks free from his restraints and reveals himself as a demon-hunter, identifying the true culprit as a bakeneko. He erects a spiritual barrier around the residence to hold the demon at bay. To exorcise the spirit, he explains that he must learn its form, the truth behind its appearance, and the reasoning for its actions. He begins questioning the family and their retainers, but they evade his inquiries, hiding a dark secret from their past. As the bakeneko grows stronger, it pierces the medicine peddler’s barriers and claims more victims among the household. Pressured by the escalating attacks, the family members reluctantly start alluding to their hidden history. The bakeneko finally breaks through the last barrier, leaving the medicine peddler exposed. He attempts to draw his sword to destroy it, but his effort fails, and the demon forces him to witness a vision.
