Description
Adopted into detective Hideyuki Makimura's family as a child, Kaori Makimura—originally Kaori Hisaishi—lost her criminal biological father, Junichi Hisaishi, in an accident during infancy following her parents' divorce. Hideyuki's father, the detective pursuing Junichi, brought her into their home. She first met Ryo Saeba as a nursing student, saving his life by treating a gunshot wound. Inheriting her brother Hideyuki's Smith & Wesson Model 36 revolver after his death, she became Ryo's partner in the City Hunter team. She managed clients and operations while frequently restraining Ryo's flirtatious tendencies. Their partnership deepened into mutual romance, culminating in an implied marriage by the manga's conclusion.

Trained in trap-making and demolition by Umibozu, Kaori constructed complex defensive systems. Though proficient, Ryo modified her inherited revolver to prevent accurate targeting, restricting it to self-defense. She famously wielded oversized weapons like a boomerang-style mallet or a bazooka to discipline Ryo and demonstrated the capacity to deploy multiple grenades simultaneously during intense fights.

In the *Angel Heart* narrative, Kaori died in an accident as a registered organ donor. Her heart was transplanted into Xiang Ying (Glass Heart), a young suicide attempt survivor. Kaori's presence persisted within Xiang Ying, manifesting in dreams and occasionally influencing actions—preventing violence or communicating with allies like Umibozu and Miki. This guidance helped Xiang Ying navigate her connection to Ryo and adapt to her new life. Kaori's influence sometimes resembled limited possession, particularly in comedic moments where she controlled Xiang Ying's body to reprimand Ryo.

During the *Angel Dust* storyline, she actively supported Ryo's investigation into a "Angel Dust Modified" nanomachine biotech conspiracy. She provided logistical coordination and direct combat assistance, notably operating a rocket launcher during a critical waterfront confrontation against antagonists tied to Ryo's past.

Key relationships defined her journey: her protective bond with adoptive brother Hideyuki; her deep, complex partnership and romance with Ryo Saeba; her mentorship under Umibozu; her connection to biological sister Sayuri Tachiki, who chose not to disrupt Kaori's life with Ryo; and her role as both donor and spiritual guide to Xiang Ying. Her legacy endures through Xiang Ying, who inherits aspects of her personality and purpose.
