Chisa Yokoyama
Description
Chisa Yokoyama is a veteran Japanese voice actress and singer, born on December 20, 1969, in Tokyo, Japan. She has been active in the industry since her debut in 1987 and is known for a wide range of iconic roles across anime, OVA, and video game series from the 1990s onwards.
Her inspiration to become a voice actor came during her teenage years after watching the film Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. While in high school, she enrolled in the Katsuta Voice Actor Academy to study acting. During this time, she was also selected as an assistant for the "Jump Broadcasting Station" segment in Weekly Shōnen Jump, a role she held for eight years and which helped raise her public profile. Her professional debut was in 1987 as Ferris in the original video animation (OVA) Black Magic M-66.
Yokoyama's first leading role in a television anime came in 1990 as Milk in NG Knight Ramune & 40. Throughout the early 1990s, she established herself as a prolific voice actor, taking on a variety of roles. She is particularly well-known for her long-standing association with the Tenchi Muyo! franchise, where she voices the character Sasami Masaki Jurai (also known as Sasami Kawai) and her counterpart, Tsunami, a role she has played since 1992 across numerous series, OVAs, and films, including Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki and its later installments. Another significant early role was as the energetic child actress Sana Kurata in the OVA pilot for Kodocha.
The mid-1990s brought two of her most celebrated performances. In 1995, she voiced Lucrezia Noin in the popular series Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, a role that demonstrated her range by portraying a calm, collected, and skilled military instructor. The same year, she was cast as Sakura Shinguji in the Sega video game Sakura Wars. This role became a defining part of her career, as she not only voiced the character in numerous games, anime, and films but also portrayed her on stage for over a decade in the series' renowned all-female musical stage shows, the Sakura Wars Karaoke Show. Her work on Sakura Wars cemented her status as a leading voice actor and expanded her career into live performance, where she trained in various disciplines like dance and stage combat.
Her filmography also includes roles in a vast array of other productions. She voiced the Yellow Doraemon (also known as Dora-the-Kid) in the 1995 film 2112: The Birth of Doraemon, Jun Asuka in the OVA Iron Virgin Jun, Chiaki Enno in Kishin Dōji Zenki, Flute in Violinist of Hamelin, Yuna Kagurazaka in the Galaxy Fraulein Yuna series, and Meme in a Soreike! Anpanman film. In the 2000s and 2010s, her roles included Biscuit Krueger in the 2011 Hunter x Hunter series and a brief role in Pop Team Epic, where she voiced Pipimi.
Throughout her career, Yokoyama has been a frequent collaborator with producer Kenji Terada and creator Hiroi Ouji, appearing in many of their projects, including the various Tenchi Muyo! and Sakura Wars titles. Beyond voice acting, she has been active as a singer, releasing numerous albums and character songs, and as a writer, publishing essays and books. She was originally affiliated with Arts Vision but later became a free agent and now runs her own voice actor agency, Bambina. Her contributions to anime and voice acting in the 1990s make her a notable figure in the industry.
