Satomi Satou
Description
Satomi Satou is a Japanese voice actress and singer born on May 8, 1986, in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. Her fascination with voice acting began in childhood, inspired by the anime she watched. During high school, she was a member of the broadcasting club and demonstrated significant talent in narration, winning the Miyagi prefectural contest of the NHK Cup national broadcasting competition and advancing to the national semifinals. This achievement helped her fulfill a condition set by her mother to allow her to move to Tokyo to pursue a career in voice acting. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in the voice acting department at Tokyo Announce Gakuin Performing Arts College to receive professional training. While still a student there, she was selected to be an assistant on the radio program Tomokazu Miki no Radio Big Bang, where she also formed the unit Kisty with other assistants.
Satou made her anime debut in 2007 with a minor role in Kamichama Karin and took on various supporting parts that year. In 2008, she landed her first leading role as Yuzuki Mikage in Jigoku Shōjo Mitsuganae. Her career breakthrough came in 2009 with the role of the energetic drummer Ritsu Tainaka in the immensely popular series K-On!. This role significantly raised her public profile and led to her involvement in real-world musical performances. As part of the in-series band "Houkago Tea Time," she learned to play the drums from scratch for live concerts. Her work on K-On! also earned her the Singing Award at the 4th Seiyu Awards in 2010, shared with her co-stars. The following year, in 2011, she received the Best New Actress Award at the 5th Seiyu Awards, recognizing her rising prominence in the industry.
Following her breakthrough, Satou built a prolific career with a wide range of notable roles. In the long-running fantasy series Fairy Tail, she voiced the young Sky Dragon Slayer Wendy Marvell, a character she has played across multiple seasons, films, and OVAs for over a decade. She also took on the role of Saki Hanajima in the 2019 reboot of Fruits Basket and its subsequent seasons and films. In the mystery series Hyouka, she portrayed the famously curious Eru Chitanda, a performance that became one of her most iconic. Her comedic range is evident in roles such as Aria Shichijou in Seitokai Yakuindomo and Chiya Ujimatsu in Is the Order a Rabbit?. In The Irregular at Magic High School, she voices Mizuki Shibata, a role she has reprised in multiple seasons and a film. Other prominent roles include Manami Tamura in Oreimo, Yukiko Kanzaki in Assassination Classroom, Tsumugi Takanashi in the IDOLiSH7 series, Ninon in Princess Connect! Re:Dive, Lily in Wasteful Days of High School Girls, and Matoi in Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode Oracle. Her filmography also includes Pipimi in Pop Team Epic, Belza in The Dungeon of Black Company, Iz in BOFURI, and Syoco in Kandagawa Jet Girls.
Beyond anime, Satou has an extensive career in video games. She is well-known for voicing the female protagonist Corrin in Fire Emblem Fates and its related appearances in games like Fire Emblem Heroes and Super Smash Bros.. Other major game roles include Magilou in Tales of Berseria, Queen of Sheba in Fate/Grand Order, Alfin Reise Arnor in The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel series, and Matoi in Phantasy Star Online 2. In 2014, she launched a solo music career under the Starchild label, releasing singles and albums that often tie into her anime roles.
Throughout her career, Satou has been known for her versatility, often voicing calm and gentle characters but also successfully taking on more energetic and comedic roles. She has been involved in several recurring collaborations, frequently appearing in works by Kyoto Animation such as K-On!, Hyouka, and Free!. Her work on Is the Order a Rabbit? led to her participation in the voice actress unit Petit Rabbit's, which performed theme songs for the series. She was previously affiliated with Aoni Production from her debut until March 2024, after which she transferred to Axl-One. Satou married fellow voice actor Takuma Terashima in July 2017, and they announced the birth of their first child in December 2021.
