Description
A young boy named Ozawa Kikuji lives in rural Japan, where he seems destined to take over the family farm. His school teacher, Otsuki, sees a different path for him and encourages Kikuji to pursue an unusual dream: making violins by hand. The boy becomes fascinated with the craft, spending years roaming the mountains in search of the perfect wood. He meets a woodsman named Abe and his daughter Kayo, who help him in his quest to build a truly great instrument, studying the techniques of the legendary Antonio Stradivari.
However, his peaceful pursuit is shattered when he receives a conscription notice and is forced to join the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. He is assigned to the medical corps of the 9th Division, garrisoned in the quiet backwater of Mudanjiang in Japanese-occupied Manchuria. There, he meets a Russian emigrant violinist named Lensky, who owns a genuine Stradivarius. Seeing the instrument rekindles Kikuji’s passion, and he makes detailed sketches of it, vowing to build a violin like it after the war.
His unit is eventually transferred to the front lines. His ship is torpedoed, and while he survives, he loses many close friends in the maelstrom of battle. Kikuji eventually returns to Japan alive, but he is emotionally scarred. The trauma of the war leaves him unable to return to his beloved craft, until memories of the people who believed in him and the sound of the violin pull him back from the brink. The story is based on a childrens book by Noboru Wada and covers themes of perseverance, the destructive nature of war, and the healing power of music and craftsmanship.
