Description
"Red Data Girl" is a 12-episode anime series based on the light novel series by Noriko Ogiwara. The narrative centers around Izumiko Suzuhara, a shy and reserved high school girl raised in the rural Kumano region of Japan. Izumiko possesses a unique ability: she unintentionally causes electronic devices to malfunction when she is near them. This peculiar trait isolates her from her peers, and she struggles to fit in. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she is sent to live with her father in Tokyo and enrolls in a prestigious school.
Upon arriving in Tokyo, Izumiko is accompanied by Miyuki Sagara, a childhood acquaintance who has been tasked with protecting her. Miyuki is initially reluctant and dismissive of his role, but as the story progresses, his attitude shifts. It is revealed that Izumiko is the vessel for a powerful spiritual entity, and her presence attracts supernatural forces. Miyuki, who comes from a lineage of shrine guardians, is bound by duty to ensure her safety. The two are drawn into a world of ancient rituals, divine powers, and hidden organizations that seek to control or exploit Izumiko's abilities.
As Izumiko begins to uncover the truth about her identity, she learns that her connection to the spiritual world is far deeper than she imagined. Her powers are tied to the Himegami, a divine being worshipped in the Kumano region. This revelation places her at the center of a conflict between traditional religious practices and modern technological advancements. The series explores themes of identity, duty, and the clash between tradition and progress, as Izumiko grapples with her role as a bridge between the human and spiritual realms.
The supporting cast includes characters such as Mayura, a classmate who becomes one of Izumiko's few friends, and Takayanagi, a mysterious figure with his own agenda. The story unfolds through a mix of supernatural intrigue, personal growth, and the evolving relationship between Izumiko and Miyuki. While the series concludes with some resolution, it leaves room for further exploration of its rich mythological and cultural backdrop.
