Conan Edogawa is Shinichi Kudo's alias after members of the Black Organization poison him with the experimental drug APTX 4869 during an investigation at Tropical Land, transforming him into a child. To protect himself and others from the organization, he adopts this new identity, combining the names of mystery authors Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Ranpo. He lives with his childhood friend Ran Mouri and her father, Kogoro Mouri, using their connection to Kogoro's detective agency to find cases potentially linked to the Black Organization. Though physically a child, Conan retains his teenage intellect, memories, and deductive skills. Attending Teitan Elementary School, he forms the Detective Boys with classmates Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima. Initially annoyed by their antics, he gradually forms camaraderie and assigns them investigative tasks. To solve cases discreetly, he employs gadgets invented by Professor Agasa, such as a wristwatch tranquilizer dart to sedate Kogoro and a voice-changing bowtie to impersonate Kogoro's voice during deductions, creating the "Sleeping Kogoro" persona. He occasionally uses Sonoko Suzuki as a proxy for deductions when Ran or Sonoko are involved. Conan maintains a childlike facade, calling Ran "Ran-neechan" and referring to his original self as "Shinichi-niichan." He often uses simplistic language around adults but sometimes inadvertently reveals advanced knowledge during cases, attributing it to television, Kogoro, Professor Agasa, or Shinichi. Possessing a strong sense of justice, he seeks to apprehend criminals and actively intervenes to prevent culprits from committing suicide, believing failure to do so equates to failing as a detective. This conviction stems from a past incident where he couldn't stop a culprit's suicide, which continues to affect him. He shares a close relationship with the protective Ran, who remains unaware of his true identity, leading to personal dilemmas. His investigative prowess arouses suspicion from some law enforcement figures, including FBI agents and Nagano Police, though most remain ignorant of his background. He collaborates with allies like FBI agent Shuichi Akai and later Ai Haibara, a former Black Organization member codenamed Sherry who also shrank due to APTX 4869. Haibara provides vital information about the organization, including warnings against investigating the boss's phone number, which she describes as a "Pandora’s Box." During the events of "The Bride of Halloween," Conan investigates bombings in Shibuya coinciding with Halloween festivities. This case connects to a past incident involving Rei Furuya (also known as Toru Amuro) and his police academy classmates—Hiromitsu Morofushi, Jinpei Matsuda, Kenji Hagiwara, and Wataru Date—who previously thwarted a bombing by "Plamya." When a serial bomber linked to Matsuda’s death escapes prison, Conan partners with Furuya to investigate new attacks, one of which injures Kogoro and Haibara. Analyzing patterns in Shibuya’s street layouts from a recovered document, Conan deduces Christine Richard as the true identity of "Plamya." He intervenes to prevent vigilante justice against her by Elenica Lavrentyeva, leader of "Nado Unichtozit," and coordinates with the Detective Boys to deploy a large inflatable ball, separating reactive chemicals dispersed across Shibuya and preventing a city-wide explosion. His broader activities involve confronting Black Organization members across multiple story arcs. In the Vermouth Arc, he uncovers actress Sharon Vineyard's involvement. During the Kir Arc, he aids in planting CIA agent Hidemi Hondou as a spy within the organization under the codename Kir. In the Bourbon Arc, he identifies Rei Furuya as a Public Safety Bureau agent infiltrating the organization and devises strategies to protect Haibara from Bourbon’s investigations. Currently, in the Rum Arc, he pursues the organization’s second-in-command based on fragmented descriptions Haibara provided. Physically, Conan possesses proficiency in soccer, though his childlike physique limits his strength. He compensates using power-enhancing kick shoes invented by Professor Agasa, enabling him to subdue suspects with projectiles. A notable weakness is being tone-deaf, affecting his ability to sing accurately despite recognizing melodies.
