Description
After being forcibly administered the experimental poison APTX 4869 by the Black Organization, Shinichi Kudo adopted the alias Conan Edogawa—a homage to mystery authors Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo. The poison caused his body to regress to a six-year-old while preserving his memories, intellect, and personality. To evade the organization, he moved in with neighbor Professor Agasa before relocating to the home of childhood friend Ran Mouri and her father, private detective Kogoro Mouri. This placement allowed him to monitor Kogoro’s cases for Black Organization intel.
Conan employs Agasa’s inventions to solve cases covertly, including a tranquilizer watch to sedate Kogoro and a voice-changing bowtie to impersonate him, forging the "Sleeping Kogoro" persona. Enrolled at Teitan Elementary School, he formed the Detective Boys with classmates Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima, gradually bonding with them despite initial reservations. His routine involves aiding Kogoro, investigating with the Detective Boys, and pursuing the Black Organization. When alone with Ran or her friend Sonoko Suzuki, he occasionally uses Sonoko as a deduction proxy.
Publicly, Conan maintains a childlike facade, addressing Ran as "Ran-neechan" and his original self as "Shinichi-niichan." During investigations, however, he inadvertently displays advanced deductive reasoning or knowledge, blaming it on television, Kogoro, Agasa, or Shinichi. He retains Shinichi’s deductive prowess, encyclopedic knowledge, and attention to detail, enabling him to dissect crime-scene inconsistencies. His athletic skills, particularly soccer, remain enhanced by Agasa’s power-boosting shoes.
Driven by a staunch commitment to justice, he opposes culprits taking their own lives, believing a detective who induces suicide is no better than a murderer. His close bond with Ran leads to awkward moments, such as her confessing feelings for Shinichi to him or involving him in scenarios like shared baths. Against the Black Organization, he allies with fellow APTX 4869 victim Ai Haibara (Shiho Miyano) and FBI agents like Shuichi Akai, disrupting operations and planting infiltrators. In specific cases like "Conan vs. Kid: Shark & Jewel," he confronts phantom thief Kaitou Kid using gadgets and analytical skills during elaborate chases.
Conan mentally segregates his identities, referencing "changing back into Conan" after temporary reversions to Shinichi. He positions himself as the primary operative against the Black Organization, viewing Shinichi as peripheral.
