Shinichi Kudo adopts the alias Conan Edogawa after an experimental poison, APTX 4869, administered by the Black Organization, transforms his body into that of a child. This occurs while Shinichi, a 17-year-old high school detective, investigates suspicious activity at a theme park. To protect himself and others, he takes the name derived from authors Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo. Professor Hiroshi Agasa, his neighbor, arranges for Conan to live with Shinichi's childhood friend Ran Mouri and her father, private detective Kogoro Mouri. This placement allows Conan to utilize Kogoro's detective agency as a potential source of cases connected to the Black Organization. Conan retains Shinichi's high intellect, deductive skills, and knowledge but outwardly behaves like a child to preserve his secret. He addresses Ran as "Ran-neechan" and refers to his original self as "Shinichi-niichan." Despite attempts at childlike behavior, he often inadvertently reveals advanced reasoning during investigations, later attributing such insights to television, Kogoro, Agasa, or Shinichi. His interests in Sherlock Holmes and soccer persist, discussed cautiously to avoid suspicion. Conan frequently assists Kogoro by tranquilizing him with a wristwatch stun gun and using a bowtie-shaped voice changer to simulate Kogoro's voice, creating the "Sleeping Kogoro" persona. This elevates Kogoro's reputation while enabling Conan to covertly pursue the Black Organization. Enrolled at Teitan Elementary School, Conan befriends classmates Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima, forming the Detective Boys. Initially annoyed by their childishness, he grows fond of them and involves them in minor investigations. He struggles with popular children's games, video games, and television shows, leading others to perceive him as inexperienced. This motivates him to secretly study media to blend in better. Around the Detective Boys, he acts more naturally, though they notice his inconsistency when feigning childishness around adults. Conan's athletic skills, especially in soccer, are hampered by his small physique, forcing reliance on Agasa's gadgets like power-enhancing kick shoes, a solar-powered skateboard, and a soccer ball dispenser belt. Conan's relationship with Ran is complicated by his concealed identity. She remains protective, unaware he is Shinichi, leading to situations like her confession of feelings for Shinichi to Conan or shared baths. Conan is equally protective of her, devising elaborate ruses to explain Shinichi's absences. His investigation intensifies after encountering Shiho Miyano, a former Black Organization member who created APTX 4869. Following her own transformation into a child, she adopts the name Ai Haibara and joins Agasa's household. Haibara provides critical information about the organization and develops temporary antidotes to APTX 4869, allowing Conan to briefly revert to Shinichi. These antidotes are used sparingly, often to alleviate Ran's suspicions or in emergencies. Conan collaborates with allies including the FBI, CIA, and Japanese police to combat the Black Organization. Key figures include FBI agents Shuichi Akai and Jodie Starling, PSB agent Rei Furuya (undercover as Bourbon), and CIA operative Hidemi Hondou (undercover as Kir). He also forms a rivalry-turned-friendship with Osaka detective Heiji Hattori, who deduces Conan's true identity. Conan's resolve to apprehend criminals is tempered by a commitment to prevent suicides among culprits, stemming from an early failure to stop one. He believes a detective who allows a culprit to die is no better than a murderer. In the "Black Iron Submarine" storyline, Conan confronts the Black Organization during an incident at the Pacific Buoy, an Interpol underwater facility. The facility's "All-Age Recognition" system, capable of global surveillance and facial age regression, identifies Haibara as Shiho Miyano. The organization, including new member Pinga, kidnaps Haibara and engineer Naomi Argento. Conan works with Interpol and allies like Subaru Okiya (Shuichi Akai in disguise) to locate the captives, revealing the system's flaw was staged by Vermouth to protect Haibara. During the climax, Conan uses an underwater scooter and headset to navigate the submarine and coordinates with Akai to damage it, leading to Pinga's death. Haibara rescues Conan after he loses consciousness underwater. Post-rescue, Naomi deduces Haibara's identity but keeps it secret due to their past friendship. Across other media, Conan's character development includes OVAs exploring scenarios like memory loss ("The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa"), aging ten years due to an experimental antidote ("The Stranger from Ten Years Later"), and collaborative cases with allies like Heiji Hattori and Kaito Kid. Spin-offs like "Zero's Tea Time" depict his interactions with Rei Furuya, while "The Police Academy Arc" shows trust-based collaborations during high-stakes operations. These stories consistently emphasize his deductive prowess, reliance on technology, and unwavering mission to dismantle the Black Organization.
