Description
After being transformed into a child by the experimental poison APTX 4869, administered by the Black Organization following an attack at Tropical Land where he witnessed suspicious activities, Shinichi Kudo adopts the alias "Conan Edogawa." He takes this name from mystery writers Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo to protect his identity and loved ones. Professor Agasa, his neighbor, arranges for Conan to live with Ran Mouri and her father Kogoro Mouri.
Conan enrolls at Teitan Elementary School, joining the Detective Boys—classmates Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima. Though initially finding them bothersome, he gradually warms to the group and occasionally assigns them investigative tasks. To gather intelligence on the Black Organization, he secretly aids Kogoro Mouri's detective work using Professor Agasa's inventions. These include a tranquilizer dart to subdue Kogoro and a voice-changing bowtie to impersonate him during deductions, creating the "Sleeping Kogoro" persona. When only Ran Mouri and Sonoko Suzuki are present, he sometimes uses Sonoko as a proxy, leading to her own "sleeping detective" reputation. In later cases, Conan solves mysteries directly, attributing the solutions to Shinichi Kudo.
Conan maintains a child's appearance and mannerisms, calling Ran "Ran-neechan" and referring to Shinichi as "Shinichi-niichan." His retained intelligence, deductive skills, and knowledge earn him the moniker "Heisei Holmes." He often employs advanced reasoning during investigations, crediting television or teachings from Kogoro, Agasa, or Shinichi to deflect suspicion. A strong sense of justice compels him to prevent cornered culprits from committing suicide, a resolve stemming from a past failure. He remains protective of Ran Mouri, though her unawareness of his true identity leads to awkward moments, such as her confessing feelings for Shinichi to him. Around the Detective Boys, he acts more naturally, though unfamiliarity with children's games and poor video game skills cause peers to view him as inexperienced.
His detective skills encompass photographic memory, acute attention to detail, and identifying inconsistencies in crime scenes and testimonies. Physically constrained, his soccer skills are aided by Professor Agasa's power-enhancing kick shoes to subdue criminals. He demonstrates proficiency in skiing, snowboarding, and ice-skating, and possesses basic firearms handling ability. A notable weakness is being tone-deaf, affecting his singing.
In "The Million-dollar Pentagram," Conan collaborates with Heiji Hattori to investigate a Hakodate heist and murder involving Kaito Kid, who targets swords linked to a historical treasure. Conan deduces the treasure's location using a pentagram-shaped crossguard and aerial alignment over Goryokaku, employing Professor Agasa's hot-air balloon and a laser pointer to pinpoint Mount Hakodate. He confronts arms dealer Brian D. Kadokura, who attempts detonation of city-wide explosives, and works with Kid (disguised as Kadokura's subordinate Nacho) to thwart the plan. During these events, a familial connection between Shinichi Kudo and Kaito Kuroba is revealed, clarifying their physical resemblance.
Conan continues pursuing the Black Organization with allies like the FBI and Ai Haibara (formerly the Black Organization's Sherry), who provides group intelligence. He has encountered operatives including Bourbon, a Public Security Bureau officer, and Rum, the organization's second-in-command, while maintaining his civilian disguise.
