Description
Conan Edogawa is the public identity assumed by the high school detective Shinichi Kudo after he was forcibly poisoned by the Black Organization. The experimental drug, APTX 4869, did not kill him but instead caused his body to shrink to the size of a six- or seven-year-old child. To hide his true identity from the syndicate and protect those close to him, he adopted the alias Conan Edogawa, a name inspired by the mystery writers Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Ranpo.
In his daily life, Conan resides at the Mouri Detective Agency, having been placed in the care of his childhood friend Ran Mouri and her father, the private detective Kogoro Mouri. While physically appearing as a young elementary school student, his cognitive abilities, deductive reasoning, and memories remain fully intact. This creates a defining duality in his personality: he must constantly maintain a childish facade while possessing the mind of a teenage genius. He addresses Ran as "Ran-neechan" and uses exclamations like "Ah-le-le?" to project innocence, often attributing his advanced knowledge or slips of mature speech to things he learned from television, Professor Agasa, or Shinichi himself. He retains his passion for detective work, Sherlock Holmes, and soccer, though he must temper these interests when around unsuspecting adults. Despite his outward composure, he is prone to internally critiquing those around him, particularly Kogoro Mouri, and can become frustrated when his young peers act recklessly.
His primary motivation is to dismantle the Black Organization and secure a permanent antidote to return to his original body. To compensate for his diminutive stature and physical limitations, Conan relies on a suite of ingenious gadgets invented by his neighbor, Professor Hiroshi Agasa. These include a voice-changing bowtie that allows him to impersonate others, most notably creating the "Sleeping Kogoro" persona by which he solves cases. His other tools include power-enhancing kick shoes that amplify his natural soccer skills into formidable weapons, a tranquilizer wristwatch, tracking glasses, and a solar-powered skateboard for high-speed mobility. While exceptionally gifted in numerous areas including languages, piloting vehicles, and even possessing absolute pitch, a notable weakness is his tone-deafness, which makes his singing notoriously poor.
Within the story, Conan plays a central role as the driving force behind countless criminal investigations. He has key relationships with several characters who are aware of his true identity. He works closely with Ai Haibara, a fellow victim of the APTX 4869 who was the drug's original creator, and she often provides temporary antidotes that allow him to briefly revert to his Shinichi form. He shares a friendly but intense rivalry with Heiji Hattori, a fellow high school detective from Osaka who deduced his secret. At school, he is a reluctant member of the Detective Boys, a group of young classmates including Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima, whose cases often challenge his ability to conceal his true intellect. He also has a complex, adversarial relationship with the phantom thief Kaito Kid, who later becomes aware of Conan's secret, leading to a competitive dynamic where they frequently clash. Throughout his journey, Conan develops from an initially reckless pursuer of the Black Organization into a more cautious and collaborative strategist, often coordinating with FBI and CIA operatives as his network of allies grows. His overarching goal remains consistent: to dismantle the syndicate, protect the people he cares about, and ultimately reclaim his life as Shinichi Kudo.
