Description
In the electric heart of Tokyo's Akihabara district, a mecca for otaku culture, a deliveryman named Nobuo Akagi spends his days lost in daydreams of heroism. A die-hard Super Sentai fanatic who still lives with his mother, Nobuo is recruited by the eccentric scientist Hiroyo Hakase alongside two other young women: Mitsuki Aoyagi, a serious and skilled martial artist who secretly harbors otaku interests, and Yumeria Moegi, a bubbly cosplayer and creator of doujinshi. They are chosen to become the Unofficial Sentai Akibaranger, tasked with protecting Akihabara from the sinister Stema Otsu Corporation, a malevolent marketing firm led by the alluring but cruel Malseena.
However, the trio quickly discovers that their new roles come with an unusual twist. Their battles are not initially real; they exist within a shared "Delusion World" powered by their imagination using a device called the MMZ-01 Moe Moe Z-Cune. In this state, their heroic exploits, dramatic role calls, and battles against the corporation's "Chief Clerks" are visible only to themselves, making them look like fools to the general public. The conflict escalates when the delusions begin to bleed into reality, forcing the Akibarangers to grow from reluctant dreamers into actual defenders. The first season follows their struggle to be recognized, playing with classic Super Sentai tropes as they fight to prevent their beloved district from being gentrified into a soulless business zone, all while dealing with the painful social awkwardness of being adult otaku, a concept referred to as "itai" (painful/cringey).
A second season, subtitled Season Tsuu, hits the reset button with a reality-altered timeline. The Akibarangers have disbanded following the defeat of Stema Otsu, but Nobuo discovers official merchandise for his team in a store, even though they were never officially recognized. Reuniting with a married Yumeria, now hiding her otaku hobbies from her wealthy in-laws, Nobuo learns that Mitsuki has left for America. She is replaced by Luna Iwashimizu, an ambitious aspiring idol who joins believing the whole affair is a television production. Together, they face a new enemy: the Neo Dimensional Brain Reconstructive Underground True Empire of Baros lol, led by the returned Malseena and a mysterious figure known as General Tsuu. The stakes turn meta, as the villains threaten to erase the history of official Super Sentai teams, replacing them with parodies like the rival hero Prism Ace. The narrative deepens its parody by having the heroes navigate rewritten timelines and interact with characters from official series to restore the franchise's history, exploring the pain and joy of being a fan in a world that might not want them.
