Description
Son Goten, the second son of Goku and Chi-Chi, is a hybrid Saiyan and Earthling. Born in late Age 767, he grew up without meeting his father until age seven due to Goku's death during the Cell Games. His mother, Chi-Chi, trained him rigorously in martial arts, prioritizing combat over academics unlike his older brother Gohan. Remarkably, Goten accidentally achieved the Super Saiyan transformation at just three or seven years old during training, becoming the youngest to do so at that time. This immense early power stemmed partly from his conception occurring while Goku maintained Super Saiyan Full Power, amplifying his latent potential.
As a child, Goten bore a striking resemblance to his father, mirroring Goku's hairstyle, facial features, and iconic orange gi. To forge his own identity and avoid confusion, he later adopted a shaggier hairstyle reminiscent of Yamcha or Gohan during adolescence. His attire evolved in *Dragon Ball Super* to a blue sleeveless changshan with a lavender undershirt when not fighting. By the events of *Super Hero*, he wore a long green buttoned shirt, purple undershirt, and black pants, standing taller with hair styled like Gohan's during the Cell Saga.
Goten's personality blends his father's fun-loving, kind-hearted nature with his mother's emphasis on manners and common sense. He exhibits playful mischief, heavily influenced by his best friend Trunks, yet often serves as the voice of reason in their escapades. He holds deep admiration for Gohan, fiercely defending his honor, and initially found the Great Saiyaman persona "cool." Though he later rejected wearing a costume as a teenager, he eventually adopted the Saiyaman X-2 alias himself. Sharing Goku's love for wild animals and immense appetite—favoring pocky sticks and strawberry daifuku—Goten also inherited an aversion to vegetables. As a teenager, he matured slightly, focusing on typical interests like video games, bikes, and social life while remaining notably carefree compared to peers like Trunks.
Goten first appeared publicly at the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, training under Gohan to master flight—a skill he lacked despite his Super Saiyan abilities. He competed in the Junior Division, losing to Trunks in the finals after both broke rules restricting transformations. They later entered the Adult Division disguised as "Mighty Mask." During the Majin Buu crisis, witnessing Buu kill his mother fueled his determination. He trained intensely with Trunks under Goku and Piccolo to master the Fusion Dance, creating Gotenks to battle Buu. Though absorbed and later killed when Earth was destroyed, he was revived and contributed energy to Goku's Spirit Bomb that ultimately defeated Kid Buu.
In *Dragon Ball Super*, Goten attends Blue Hal High School with Trunks, befriending classmates Rulah, Kompas, and Chok. He moonlights as the superhero Saiyaman X-2 alongside Trunks (Saiyaman X-1), utilizing transformation tech from Emperor Pilaf to patrol for petty crime. During the Tournament of Power, he guarded Monster Island for Android 17, battling feral Cell Juniors. His fusion skills regressed, leading to failed attempts to form Gotenks against threats like Cell Max or during sparring sessions with Gohan. A timeline divergence depicted an alternate Goten killed by Goku's body, possessed by Zamasu.
In *Dragon Ball Super: Broly*, Goten appeared briefly during Frieza's invasion but did not engage in combat. He was present at Capsule Corporation when Broly attacked, though his role remained observational. Later depictions, such as in the *Super Hero* arc, showed him taller and more mature at age 16, though his fighting involvement remained limited.
