Description
Son Goten, a half-Saiyan, half-Earthling hybrid born in late Age 767, is the second son of Goku and Chi-Chi. Conceived before Goku's sacrifice in the Cell Games, his birth followed Cell's defeat by roughly nine months, meaning Goten met his father only at age seven. Chi-Chi trained him in martial arts from an early age—departing from Gohan's academic focus for reasons unclear—resulting in him accidentally achieving the Super Saiyan transformation remarkably young, reportedly between three and seven years old, the youngest at that time. This natural affinity partially stemmed from his conception during Goku's sustained Super Saiyan Full Power state. Goten formed a close bond with Trunks, Vegeta's son, their frequent "fight games" significantly sharpening their combat skills.

During the Majin Buu Saga, Goten trained with Gohan for the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, where Goku's temporary return allowed their first meeting. Despite mastering Super Saiyan, he initially struggled with basic flight, a skill Gohan taught him. At the tournament, he competed in the Junior Division, losing the final to Trunks due to rule violations. The pair then disguised themselves as "Mighty Mask" for the Adult Division, only to be exposed and disqualified by Android 18. After Gohan's apparent death during Babidi's revival of Majin Buu, Piccolo took Goten and Trunks to Kami's Lookout for safety. There, Goku taught them the Fusion Dance to create Gotenks, a fusion warrior intended to fight Buu. Piccolo completed their training after Goku returned to Other World. Witnessing Buu kill his mother intensified Goten's resolve, though he later learned she could be revived with the Dragon Balls. Gotenks battled Buu multiple times, achieving Super Saiyan 3 before being absorbed. Goten died when Buu destroyed Earth but was resurrected and contributed energy to Goku's Spirit Bomb that ultimately defeated Buu.

Two years post-Buu, in "Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!", Goten attended a banquet at Mr. Satan's new hotel. When Vegeta's exiled brother Tarble sought help against Abo and Kado (remnants of Frieza's army), radish lengths decided the combatants. Goten selected the longest radish but was paired with Trunks after Trunks picked an impossibly long one. The duo fought Abo and Kado, overwhelming them initially until the enemies duplicated. Encouraged by Gohan, they gained the upper hand, forcing Abo and Kado to fuse into Aka. After a failed first attempt, Goten and Trunks successfully fused into Gotenks, who defeated Aka but carelessly dropped his guard, leading to a counterattack blocked by Piccolo. Goku concluded the battle.

Post-Buu, Goten assisted Goku with farm work, nearly driving a tractor off a cliff while distracted. He shopped with Trunks for Videl's wedding gift, obtaining "magic" hot-spring water after confronting a giant snake. His suggestion led Goku to accept Mr. Satan's monetary reward, enabling Goku to train on King Kai's planet without Chi-Chi's objections. At Bulma's birthday, he fused with Trunks into Gotenks to confront Beerus but was effortlessly defeated. He later participated in the ritual to make Goku a Super Saiyan God. As a teenager, Goten adopted the superhero identity "Saiyaman X-2" alongside Trunks ("Saiyaman X-1"), patrolling cities in costumes reminiscent of Gohan's Great Saiyaman persona, their inexperience leading to comical mishaps.

Goten's personality blends Goku's playful, kind-hearted nature with Chi-Chi's emphasis on manners, making him more grounded than his father as a child. He exhibits typical Saiyan traits like a love for fighting and a large appetite, though he dislikes vegetables. While often following Trunks' mischievous lead, he occasionally acts as the voice of reason. His deep admiration for Gohan compels him to defend his brother's honor fiercely. As a teenager, he becomes more mature but retains his lightheartedness, shifting interests toward social activities like dating and superhero antics. His appearance evolves significantly: as a child, he closely resembles young Goku, but as a teen, he adopts longer, shaggier hair to avoid confusion with his father, later styling it similarly to Gohan's Cell Saga look or spiky and tilted in later series.
