Description
"Amazing Nurse Nanako" is a six-episode OVA series that blends science fiction, comedy, and drama. The story centers on Nanako Shichigusa, a 16-year-old girl who works as a nurse at the advanced medical facility, Organization to Observe and Monitor Individuals (OOMI). Nanako is not an ordinary nurse; she is a highly advanced android created by Dr. Kyoji Ogami, the director of OOMI. Despite her artificial nature, Nanako possesses a kind-hearted and empathetic personality, often going above and beyond to care for her patients.
The narrative unfolds as Nanako navigates her duties at OOMI, where she encounters a variety of patients with unique medical conditions, many of which stem from experimental treatments or advanced technology. Her interactions with these patients often lead to humorous and heartwarming moments, showcasing her dedication and compassion. However, the series also delves into darker themes, as OOMI is revealed to be involved in unethical experiments and covert operations. Dr. Ogami, while initially portrayed as a benevolent figure, is later shown to have a more complex and morally ambiguous agenda, using Nanako as a tool for his own purposes.
Nanako's relationships with other characters, particularly her bond with Dr. Ogami and her interactions with her fellow nurse, Misaki Tachibana, add depth to the story. Misaki, a human nurse, serves as a foil to Nanako, highlighting the contrasts between human and artificial intelligence. The series explores themes of identity, humanity, and the ethical implications of advanced technology, as Nanako grapples with her own existence and the moral dilemmas posed by her creators.
The plot takes a dramatic turn when Nanako discovers the true nature of OOMI's experiments and the extent of Dr. Ogami's manipulations. This revelation forces her to confront her own purpose and the ethical boundaries of her actions. The series culminates in a climactic confrontation that tests Nanako's resolve and her commitment to her principles, ultimately leading to a resolution that underscores the complexities of her character and the world she inhabits.
"Amazing Nurse Nanako" balances its lighthearted moments with serious undertones, creating a narrative that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. The series' exploration of advanced technology, medical ethics, and the nature of humanity makes it a distinctive entry in the science fiction genre.

After leaving to buy groceries, she returns to find Dr. Ogami and military personnel conducting an experiment. Dr. Ogami orders Nanako to perform her usual physical exercises. Once she finishes, she rejoins the experiment just as it goes out of control. The experiment kills several officers and creates a goo-like monster that absorbs Nanako. Nanako has a cold, and her sneezes weaken the creature from within. Dr. Ogami rescues Nanako, and the monster freezes and falls apart, ending the disaster. Nanako Shichigusa tends to Dr. Kyosuke’s wounds inside the Okutsuki Island medical facility after a previous skirmish. The Black Crows mercenary group, commanded by Koga, returns to the island with a reinforced unit to seize the OOPArt, a secret medical device. Nanako activates her combat mode and repels the initial assault, forcing the mercenaries to withdraw into the surrounding jungle. Koga captures Dr. Kyosuke’s daughter, Misaki, and demands the OOPArt in exchange for her safe return. Dr. Kyosuke refuses, prioritizing the device’s security over his daughter’s immediate safety. Nanako tracks Koga through the facility’s underground tunnel network and engages him in close combat. Her mechanical arm suffers a critical malfunction during the fight, exposing a design vulnerability that Koga attempts to exploit. Nanako compensates for the failure through raw physical effort, strikes Koga with a fallen pipe, and secures Misaki’s release. Koga retreats with his remaining forces, leaving the OOPArt in the facility’s possession. Dr. Kyosuke acknowledges Nanako’s performance but shows no emotional warmth, directing his attention back to his research. Koga reports the failure to an unseen superior, who responds by authorizing a direct assault on the facility.
3Episode 3
Nanako Shichigusa and the Aegis team travel to a remote island after receiving a distress signal from a research facility. Dr. Kyoji identifies the facility as a site for developing biological weapons under the Oasis organization. Upon arrival, they find the facility staff dead and a giant creature roaming the compound. The creature, a bio-weapon named Mamoru, exhibits erratic behavior and attacks indiscriminately. Nanako discovers a young girl named Misaki hiding in the laboratory, who reveals she is the creature’s designated caretaker. Misaki explains that Mamoru responds only to her voice, but Oasis agents forced her to activate it as a distraction. Aegis operatives engage the creature while Nanako protects Misaki and attempts to calm Mamoru. Misaki’s emotional plea causes Mamoru to halt its rampage, but Oasis agents trigger a self-destruct sequence in the facility. Nanako carries Misaki to safety as the building collapses, and Mamoru shields them from falling debris. The team escapes via helicopter, but Misaki learns that Mamoru sacrificed itself to ensure their survival. Dr. Kyoji reports that Oasis has initiated similar projects on multiple islands, setting the stage for further operations.
4Fire-Crackers
While Nanako sleeps,Satsuki and the hospital staff fit her with a prototype combat suit. Nanako awakens to find herself on display at an international weapons exhibition. Only Satsuki possesses the remote that controls the suit. A robot named Griffith attacks the exhibition, destroying tanks and personnel. Alan Mizuki emerges and identifies Nanako as Nana-Go, a cyborg Dr. Ogami demonstrated in college. Mizuki, once Ogami's friend, became his rival after Ogami sabotaged Mizuki's attempt to revive his lover Jamie. Nanako protests she is human, but Mizuki dismisses her claims because the suit will not detach. Mizuki releases Griffith to fight Nanako. The battle destroys half of Ogami Hospital. Mizuki drops Griffith's remote, activating a mode that attacks any moving target. A falling rock distracts Griffith, allowing the group to dash for the remote. Another rock crushes the remote before they reach it, and Griffith destroys the device. Griffith goes haywire and fires indiscriminately. Nanako grabs the robot and hurls it away, triggering its self-destruct sequence. The explosion levels Ogami Hospital. Outside the wreckage, the suit's battery drains and the armor falls apart, leaving Nanako naked. This exposes her human body to Mizuki, proving she is not a cyborg. Mizuki attempts to cover himself in embarrassment before authorities arrest him. Jamie rescues Mizuki by self-destructing during transport. Dr. Ogami returns from visiting his father to find the hospital destroyed.
5Mysterious Attack! The Sea of Trees
The medical team arrives at a dense forest after reports of a large, aggressive creature attacking research outposts. Doctor Ogami orders Nanako and the others to locate and secure the creature for study, prioritizing data acquisition over direct containment. Nanako discovers the creature is a massive, armored bio-mechanical entity with visible wounds, causing it to rampage in apparent distress. She attempts to use her healing abilities to calm it by mending its injuries, but the creature’s synthetic tissues reject her efforts and instead trigger a violent defensive response. The team’s mobile command vehicle takes heavy damage from the creature’s counterattacks, forcing Nanako to shield the vehicle and its crew. During the confrontation, Nanako realizes the creature is not a natural lifeform but a weapon designed to self-destruct when tampered with. She abandons the healing attempt and focuses on evacuating the team before the creature’s internal systems overload. The creature explodes, leveling a wide area of the forest and leaving the team without the specimen Ogami sought. In the aftermath, Ogami’s frustration turns toward a rival research division whose abandoned experimental data matches the creature’s design. He resolves to investigate that division’s hidden facility, setting Nanako on a course toward a direct confrontation with the organization’s darker projects.
6Episode 6
