Description
"Ghost Hunt" is a supernatural mystery anime centered around the investigations conducted by the Shibuya Psychic Research (SPR) team, led by the enigmatic and highly skilled 17-year-old paranormal researcher, Kazuya Shibuya, also known as Naru. The story begins when Mai Taniyama, a high school student with a fascination for ghost stories, accidentally damages SPR's equipment while sharing spooky tales with her friends. To repay the debt, Mai is forced to work as an assistant for Naru and his team, which includes a diverse group of specialists: the cheerful monk Houshou Takigawa, the stoic shrine maiden Ayako Matsuzaki, the gentle medium Masako Hara, and the Catholic priest John Brown.

The series unfolds through a series of episodic cases, each delving into a different paranormal mystery. The team investigates haunted locations, ranging from abandoned schools and cursed houses to ancient burial grounds, using a combination of scientific equipment and spiritual techniques. As the cases progress, Mai begins to develop latent psychic abilities, including precognitive dreams and astral projection, which play a crucial role in solving the mysteries. Naru's cold and analytical demeanor contrasts with Mai's empathetic and intuitive nature, creating a dynamic partnership that drives the narrative forward.

Throughout the investigations, the team encounters a variety of supernatural phenomena, including vengeful spirits, poltergeists, and curses. Each case is meticulously researched, with the team uncovering the historical and emotional context behind the hauntings. The series balances suspense and horror with moments of humor and camaraderie among the characters. As the story progresses, deeper mysteries surrounding Naru's past and his connection to the paranormal world are gradually revealed, adding layers of intrigue to the overarching plot.

The anime's structure is episodic, with each case spanning multiple episodes, allowing for detailed exploration of the supernatural occurrences and the emotional stakes involved. The characters' personal growth and evolving relationships are interwoven with the supernatural investigations, creating a compelling blend of mystery, horror, and character-driven storytelling. "Ghost Hunt" stands out for its meticulous attention to detail in depicting paranormal investigations and its ability to maintain tension and suspense while exploring the human elements behind the hauntings.

22Episode 22
The SPR team sets up a protective barrier around the doll-filled room. Lin Jounouchi draws talismans on the walls while Mai Taniyama watches for spiritual disturbances. The ghost manifests as a young girl’s translucent figure, reaching toward the client, Mrs. Matsuzaki. Naru (Kazuya Shibuya) orders everyone to maintain positions and not engage the spirit directly. Mai touches a porcelain doll and receives a vision of a small girl locked in a closet, crying for her mother. The vision reveals the girl died of starvation after her mother abandoned her. The ghost’s loneliness causes it to possess dolls and seek a replacement mother. Mrs. Matsuzaki admits she kept the dolls because they reminded her of her own deceased daughter. Naru identifies the ghost’s anchor as a specific doll named Mary, which the girl played with before death. Lin uses a ritual knife to sever the ghost’s connection to the house’s spiritual ley lines. The ghost screams and attempts to possess Mai, but Naru grabs Mai’s shoulder and channels a binding spell. He commands the ghost to leave the living world and find peace. The spirit hesitates, looks at Mrs. Matsuzaki, then fades away, leaving Mary’s porcelain face cracked and lifeless. Mrs. Matsuzaki thanks the team and decides to sell the house. The episode ends with Naru receiving a sealed envelope containing photographs of a cursed mansion, setting up the next investigation.
23Noroi no ie #2
The remaining psychics tour the area to verify Mai’s recurring dreams. A family member attempts suicide, fearing possession will lead to others being killed. Ayako provides each family member with protective charms. Two children and one other family member refuse to use the charms. Mai learns the Shinto Kuji technique from Ayako. She uses the Kuji to stop Katsuki from jumping off a cliff. The spell instead affects another family member, Wakako. The Kuji leaves lacerations on Wakako’s back. The technique successfully wards off the spirits possessing both Katsuki and Wakako. The refusal of protective charms leaves several family members vulnerable. The Kuji’s side effects demonstrate the risks of improvised spiritual intervention. The team must now address the remaining possessions without full family cooperation.
24The Bloodstained Labyrinth Part 4
Mai Taniyama touches a wall in the hospital basement and receives a psychometric vision showing Dr. Urado cutting into a living child without anesthesia. Urado performed these experiments to find a method for human immortality. The doctor's ghost emerges from the floor as a writhing mass of flesh and surgical tools. The ghost directs a telekinetic blast at Mai,forcing Naru to push her aside. Lin Koujo raises a paper talisman barrier around the group, blocking the blast. The ghost presses against the barrier, causing cracks to spread across its surface. Naru extends his right hand and emits a psychokinetic wave that repels the ghost several meters. The team uses the momentary respite to check for an exit, finding only a narrow ventilation shaft and a blocked door. Mai spots a recessed door handle behind a metal cabinet. Lin orders everyone to move toward the door while he reinforces the barrier. The ghost slams against the barrier again, the talismans ignite, and the barrier collapses. The ghost reaches through the flames and grabs Lin by the ankle.
25The Bloodstained Labyrinth (Part 4)
Mai and the team enter the final chamber of the underground labyrinth and find the skeletal remains of a boy named Urado wedged between stone walls. Lin confirms blunt force trauma as the cause of death. The ghost of Urado appears and points toward a deeper tunnel instead of attacking. Naru touches the bones and uses psychometry to experience Urado's final memories: a shrine priest locked the boy inside the labyrinth and left him to starve. The priest's vengeful spirit manifests as a dark mass that tries to crush the team. John recites a purification chant while Masako binds the priest's ghost with spiritual cords. Ayako and Monk erect a barrier to shield the group from falling debris. Mai notices Urado's ghost pushing aside a loose stone, revealing a hidden exit. The team escapes through the tunnel as the labyrinth ceiling collapses behind them. Urado's ghost smiles and dissolves into light. The team climbs out of the shrine's well, but Naru walks past without speaking. Mai sees him stop at the gate, his hand trembling slightly, hinting at unresolved distress that will affect their next investigation.
