By the time of Dragon Ball GT, he has long left that violent past behind and exists as a calm, mature figure who acts as a mentor, counselor, and quiet guardian of the planet. He is no longer driven by revenge or the desire to prove himself in battle; instead, his focus has shifted toward wisdom, protection, and watching over the people he cares about.

Throughout most of Dragon Ball GT, Piccolo steps back from the spotlight. While Goku, Pan, and Trunks travel through space in search of the Black Star Dragon Balls, Piccolo remains on Earth, observing from a distance and keeping an eye on the younger generation, including Gohan's family. He stays on Earth rather than leaving for a new Namekian homeworld because he does not feel connected to that planet; his place is beside the people he has come to protect. Despite his physical absence from the main adventures, he functions as a silent pillar of stability and peace, ready to act when danger arrives. During the Baby Saga, he senses the evil presence of Baby after the parasite takes control of Goten, and later confronts the threat when Baby transfers into Gohan's body, showing that his perception and readiness have not dulled.

Piccolo's defining role in Dragon Ball GT is tied directly to the Black Star Dragon Balls, a set of orbs created long ago by a young Kami before he divided himself into Kami and King Piccolo. When those dragon balls are used at the start of the series, they scatter across the universe and place Earth under a deadly time limit. After the planet is destroyed and restored, it becomes clear that the only way to neutralize the Black Star Dragon Balls permanently is to destroy them along with the being spiritually linked to them. Because Piccolo descends from the evil half of Kami, that link belongs to him. Faced with this reality, he makes the deliberate choice to die for good, erasing his own existence so the dragon balls can never endanger anyone again. This decision means accepting that he will never be revived, even with the ordinary Dragon Balls, which makes his sacrifice especially significant.

His final moments are treated with great weight. As Earth's destruction approaches, Piccolo stays behind while the planet is evacuated and waits calmly for the end. Goku teleports to his side to say farewell, and the two share a quiet, deeply meaningful exchange. Goku acknowledges everything Piccolo has done, while Piccolo reflects on his long journey from being Goku's enemy to becoming one of his greatest allies and a father figure to Gohan. He faces his end with complete serenity, fully aware that his choice protects the world he has spent decades defending. Before the end, he also channels his remaining energy into Goku, giving him the strength needed to teleport the last survivors to safety. Earth then explodes, and Piccolo dies with it.

Even after death, Piccolo continues to play a role. His spirit appears in the afterlife, where he keeps his calm and composed manner and helps Goku escape during the Super 17 conflict, proving that his sense of duty survives beyond his mortal life. In the final episode of the series, he appears once more in the afterlife and shares a farewell with Goku, in which Goku thanks him for everything and Piccolo calls him his friend. That moment closes the long relationship that began with rivalry and grew into mutual trust and deep respect.

In terms of abilities, Piccolo draws on the natural strengths of his Namekian physiology. He can regenerate lost limbs as long as his head remains intact, stretch and extend his arms to attack from a distance, move at great speed, and possesses superhuman strength and hearing. His signature techniques include the Special Beam Cannon, a highly focused piercing energy beam that demands intense concentration, as well as various energy-based attacks and explosive spheres of ki. In Dragon Ball GT, however, his most notable asset is not raw power but his tactical intelligence, self-control, and willingness to give up everything for the safety of Earth. He represents maturity, redemption, and sacrifice, and although he fights less than in earlier series, his emotional and spiritual importance is central to the story.
