Description
Ash Ketchum, a 10-year-old aspiring Pokémon Master from Pallet Town, oversleeps on the day he is to receive his first Pokémon. Arriving late at Professor Oak's laboratory, he finds the three starter Pokémon already taken and receives a stubborn Pikachu instead. Pikachu initially refuses to obey or enter its Poké Ball. Their relationship changes when a flock of Spearow attacks them; Ash protects Pikachu, and Pikachu drives the Spearow away with a powerful Thunderbolt. During this event, the Legendary Pokémon Ho-Oh flies overhead, dropping a Rainbow Wing feather. Ash catches the feather and vows to meet Ho-Oh again.

Ash's journey diverges significantly. He catches a Caterpie in Viridian Forest, which evolves into Metapod and then Butterfree. During heavy rain, Ash and his new companion Verity discover an abandoned Charmander. Despite intervention from its former trainer, Cross—who cruelly dismisses Charmander as weak—Ash nurses it back to health, and it joins his team. Charmander evolves into Charmeleon during training and later into Charizard in a climactic battle. Ash earns three Gym Badges, including the Rainbow Badge from Celadon City's Erika, demonstrating greater battle competence early on by defeating her in a formal battle.

Two traveling companions join Ash: Verity, a trainer from Twinleaf Town with a Piplup, and Sorrel, an aspiring Pokémon researcher from Veilstone City with a Lucario. Guided by the Rainbow Wing, their quest leads to Mount Tensei, where Ho-Oh is said to appear for the "Rainbow Hero." During the journey, Ash releases his Butterfree so it can mate with a pink Butterfree.

A significant conflict arises when Ash battles Cross, whose Incineroar defeats Charmeleon. Humiliated, Ash blames Pikachu and expresses regret about not choosing Bulbasaur or Squirtle. This rift causes the Rainbow Wing to darken. The Mythical Pokémon Marshadow, silently shadowing Ash, subjects him to a dream where no Pokémon exist. Ash attends a mundane school with Verity and Sorrel but feels a profound absence. Remembering Pikachu, he awakens, reconciles with Pikachu, and the Rainbow Wing regains its color.

At Mount Tensei, Cross reappears, steals the Rainbow Wing, and places it on the Rainbow Rock. His malevolent intent corrupts the feather, causing Marshadow to amplify the aggression of wild Pokémon. Ash shields Pikachu from their attacks, recalling it to its Poké Ball for protection. Ash's body disintegrates, but his consciousness persists in a spirit world. A distraught Pikachu unleashes a cataclysmic Thunderbolt in grief, dispelling the corruption. Hearing Pikachu's cries, Ash's body regenerates, and they reunite. A new Rainbow Wing materializes, and Ash uses it to summon Ho-Oh for a battle.

Ash's personality combines enthusiasm, resilience, and occasional impulsiveness. His defining trait is his selfless bond with Pokémon, shown when he protects Pikachu or releases Butterfree for its happiness. His concept of becoming a "Pokémon Master" involves striving to be the strongest while forming meaningful friendships. He wears a black hat with a green-stylized "L" insignia, a jacket with horizontal pockets, and a single-button design.

In subsequent films, Ash continues his journey. In *The Power of Us*, he aids Fula City during its Wind Festival, helping resolve a crisis involving the Mythical Pokémon Zeraora and inspiring others to collaborate with their Pokémon. In *Secrets of the Jungle*, he travels to the Forest of Okoya and befriends Koko, a boy raised by Zarude. A special episode, *The Distant Blue Sky*, explores his relationship with his father, who encouraged his dreams during childhood and gifted him his original hat, implying his father remains an active presence.
