Description
Meowth operates within Team Rocket alongside human partners Jessie and James, forming an inseparable trio. Uniquely among his species, he taught himself to speak human language and walk upright on two legs to impress Meowzie, a female Meowth he encountered as a Hollywood stray. Her rejection and branding of him as a "freak" led him to join Team Rocket, influenced by "rocket" being the first human word he understood. This choice permanently hindered his combat abilities, preventing him from learning his species' signature Pay Day move.

He initially aspired to become Giovanni's favored "top cat" but grew disillusioned after being replaced by a Persian, fostering lasting resentment toward that species. Assigned to sabotage Jessie and James during their trainee phase, Meowth instead forged deep loyalty with them through shared failures, particularly their repetitive, unsuccessful attempts to steal Ash Ketchum's Pikachu for Giovanni.

Within the trio, Meowth serves as interpreter for Pokémon speech and as primary inventor and mechanic, designing machines, robots, vehicles, and their signature Meowth-shaped balloon. Though typically weak in battle due to his human-like traits, he displays unexpected ferocity using Fury Swipes when enraged, passionate, or defending allies. His personality merges greed, pride, and mischief with philosophical tendencies, often lamenting life choices while gazing at the moon.

He shares a complex dynamic with Ash's Pikachu, viewing it as an archenemy due to constant conflict yet experiencing forced cooperation and mutual respect in dire situations, sometimes regretting they couldn't be friends. His own history as an abandoned stray fuels sympathy for Pokémon deserted by trainers. He pursues unsuccessful romances with feline or feminine-looking Pokémon like May's Skitty, Glameow, Gardevoir, Glaceon, and Lopunny.

Meowth remains a wild Pokémon, refusing capture by any trainer despite noted partiality toward Luxury Balls. He expresses contempt for Persian, his evolved form, and rejects evolution. Temporary separations from Jessie and James—such as a staged expulsion in Unova or a brief noodle-making career consideration in Sinnoh—always reinforce his loyalty, prompting his return to Team Rocket.
