Jouji Nakata
Description
Jouji Nakata is a highly respected and instantly recognizable Japanese actor, voice actor, and narrator. Born Hitoshi Nakata on April 22, 1954, in Tokyo, he is affiliated with the talent agency Office Osawa. His deep, resonant, and distinctive voice has made him a favorite for a wide range of characters, from charismatic villains and powerful anti-heroes to wise mentors and even comedic roles.
Before becoming a full-time voice actor, Nakata studied at the Toho Gakuen College of Drama and Music. His early career was rooted in live-action performances, including roles in tokusatsu superhero productions like Choushinsei Flashman and Choujuu Sentai Liveman. He was concurrently involved in theater and voice dubbing work when a colleague, Michiko Nomura, suggested he pursue voice acting full-time. Upon comparing the potential earnings, Nakata made the switch, a decision that would define his legendary career.
Nakata's voice acting career began to gain momentum in the 1990s. He served as the narrator for the 1993 series Mobile Suit Victory Gundam. He frequently lent his voice to formidable antagonists, with roles such as Murakumo in Blue Seed, Folken Fanel in The Vision of Escaflowne—a part he credits with advancing his career—and Gaav in Slayers Next. He also took on the role of M. Bison in the Fighter II: The Animated Movie.
The early 2000s brought Nakata some of his most iconic and defining roles. In 2001, he was cast as the immortal vampire Alucard in the Hellsing TV series. He has since stated that Alucard is the character he most enjoyed voicing and found the easiest to portray, later reprising the role for the Hellsing Ultimate OVAs. The year 2004 was a landmark one, featuring two vastly different yet equally memorable performances: the titular, enigmatic count in the stylish Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo and the passionate, honorable Corporal Giroro in the long-running and family-friendly comedy series Sgt. Frog. His role as Giroro demonstrated his versatility and endeared him to a broad audience.
Nakata has forged a significant and enduring collaboration with Type-Moon, the creative team behind the Fate series. He first voiced the complex and chilling priest Kirei Kotomine in the 2004 Fate/stay night visual novel. He has since reprised this fan-favorite role in numerous anime adaptations, including the 2006 series, the Unlimited Blade Works films and television series, the prequel Fate/zero, and the Heaven's Feel film trilogy. His association with Type-Moon also includes voicing characters like Nrvnqsr Chaos in Melty Blood and Souren Araya in The Garden of Sinners film series. The Fate series co-creator Kinoko Nasu, who knew Nakata from his live-action days, has frequently sought him out for roles.
His filmography is vast and spans decades, showcasing his ability to inhabit a remarkable variety of characters. He is the voice of the sword-wielding Nyanta in Log Horizon, the ambitious Diethard Ried in Code Geass, and the villainous Amshel Goldsmith in Blood+. He has played historical figures like Toshizo Hijikata in Peacemaker Kurogane and the elderly jujutsu sorcerer Naobito Zenin in Jujutsu Kaisen. His range extends to video games as well, where he is known for roles such as Albert Wesker in the Resident Evil franchise, Sol Badguy in the Guilty Gear series, Van Grants in Tales of the Abyss, and Kenshin Uesugi and Ieyasu Tokugawa in the Samurai Warriors series. He also provided the voice for the Birth Driver in Kamen Rider OOO.
Beyond original animation and games, Nakata is also active in overseas dubbing, providing Japanese voices for characters in Hollywood films and TV shows such as 300, Sex and the City, and The Little Mermaid. He has noted that his background in live-action performance helps him in this area of his work. Known for often being typecast in villainous or authoritative roles, Nakata himself has expressed a preference for characters with distinct, strong personalities, as they offer more dimension to explore and perform. His career stands as a testament to his immense talent and the powerful, lasting impact of his voice on anime and popular culture.
