Ōtake was a prominent figure in Japanese animation from its early days on television, and his extensive career earned him a Merit Award at both the Tokyo Anime Award Festival and the 9th Seiyu Awards in 2015.

Ōtake is best known for a wide range of iconic characters that span several decades of popular anime. He was the voice of the comedic Boss (as well as Dr. Sewashi) in the seminal super robot series Mazinger Z, a role he reprised in numerous sequels, films, and video game adaptations such as the Super Robot Wars series. In the long-running Cyborg 009 franchise, he voiced the combat specialist Albert Heinrich, also known as Cyborg 004, across several early film and television installments. Across the many iterations of the Perman series, including the original 1967 television anime, the 1983 series, and later films, Ōtake had a remarkably long run as the character Perman No. 2 (also known as Booby or Fuubii), maintaining the role for approximately 45 years. In a significant later-career role, he voiced the elderly and powerful assassin Zeno Zoldyck in the 2011 adaptation of Hunter × Hunter. His other varied television roles included Yattaran in Space Pirate Captain Harlock, the monkey Okorizaru in Pokémon, Principal Kokedaruma in Miss Machiko, Roger Ruvie in Death Note, and the peculiar Jijii in Pani Poni Dash. In film, he notably voiced the character Nezu in the landmark anime Akira.

Beyond animation, Ōtake also worked in tokusatsu productions, providing voices for characters such as President Gynamo in Gekisō Sentai Carranger, and he contributed dubbing work for international films, such as the character Grandpa George in the Nippon Television edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
