Description
Doraemon is a robotic cat from the 22nd century, manufactured at the Matsushiba Robot Factory on September 3, 2112 (Model MS-903). Originally yellow, he lost his ears to robotic mice; a failed repair attempt left him bald. Consuming a "Sadness Potion" during his depression caused tears that washed away his yellow paint, revealing his current blue coloration and instilling a severe, enduring musophobia (fear of mice). His appearance features a spherical head, limbless body, white hands and feet, a red tail, and a bell collar. A four-dimensional pocket on his abdomen holds futuristic gadgets, though his factory-rejected status causes occasional malfunctions.

Sent back in time by Sewashi Nobi to aid Nobita Nobi, Sewashi's underachieving ancestor, Doraemon's mission is to guide Nobita toward self-reliance and a better future. His personality blends compassion with irritability, particularly when mistaken for a raccoon dog (tanuki) or criticized. He exhibits gluttony, especially for dorayaki (red bean buns), which often compromises his judgment. Despite being a machine, he displays human-like emotions such as affection for mechanical cats like Noramyako and fierce loyalty to Nobita, whom he considers his closest friend.

In the "Doraemon Comes Back" narrative (adapted in a 1979 anime special, 1998 short film, and 2005 anime episode), Doraemon announces his unavoidable return to the 22nd century, believing Nobita must learn independence. Though visibly distressed, he remains resolute despite Nobita's anger and despair. During their farewell, he reassures Nobita, sharing nostalgic moments like flying via "Take-copter" or playing on a seesaw. After Nobita accepts the separation, Doraemon departs tearfully.

Following his departure, Nobita faces bullying from classmates Gian and Suneo. In some versions, Nobita discovers a gadget called "Lie 800" (or "Opposite Consequence Potion") in Doraemon’s leftover crate; it materializes the opposite of spoken statements. After using it for revenge, Nobita’s lament about Doraemon’s absence inadvertently activates the gadget, causing Doraemon’s return. Confused but overjoyed, Doraemon deduces the gadget’s role upon seeing the empty container, solidifying their inseparable bond.

Key to this storyline is Doraemon witnessing Nobita endure a beating from Gian to prove self-sufficiency. Doraemon intervenes to aid the injured Nobita, affirming his pride in Nobita’s courage.
