Kenyuu Horiuchi
Description
Kenyu Horiuchi is a veteran Japanese voice actor born on July 30, 1957, in Gotemba, Shizuoka. He has been active in the industry since his debut in the early 1980s and founded his own voice acting management office, Kenyu Office, in 2002. His contributions to animation were formally recognized when he received the Animation Achievement Award at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival in 2025, an honor celebrating individuals who have made significant contributions to the animation industry and culture over a career spanning more than four decades.
Horiuchi's path to voice acting began after he was invited into the industry by fellow voice actor Kazuya Tatekabe. He attended the Tokyo Announce Academy and other training programs before making his debut. Throughout his long career, he has demonstrated remarkable versatility, lending his voice to a wide spectrum of characters. He has himself noted that he feels capable of performing two main archetypes: the cool and composed characters, or the hopeless and comedic ones. His voice is described as a smooth and alluring high baritone, capable of conveying both sincerity and menace.
Horiuchi's filmography is extensive and spans numerous iconic anime series. Some of his most notable roles include Mashymre Cello in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, Pain and Tobirama Senju in the Naruto series, and the narrator for the Samurai Pizza Cats. In the 1990s, he gained significant popularity with female fans for his role as the Guardian of Fire, Oscar, in the long-running Angelique series of games and anime, becoming a staple guest at related live events. He is also well-known for his portrayal of the elderly swordsman Wilhelm van Astrea in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- and the mob boss En in Dorohedoro. Other prominent roles include Sanson in Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Gren in Cowboy Bebop, Jamil Neate in After War Gundam X, and Kin'emon in One Piece. He also voices Libra Dohko in the Saint Seiya franchise and Toki in the Fist of the North Star series. In more recent years, he has taken on roles such as Oguma in BEASTARS, Zetsu Daidan in Back Arrow, Taiyang Xiao Long in RWBY: Ice Queendom, and Sgt. Mokutaro Kikuta in Golden Kamuy.
Beyond anime, Horiuchi is renowned for his work in dubbing foreign films and series. He is the primary Japanese dubbing voice for several major Hollywood actors, including Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, Charlie Sheen, and Ben Stiller. He also famously voiced the protagonist Raiden in the Metal Gear Solid video game series. Following the passing of Unsho Ishizuka in 2018, Horiuchi took over the roles of the series narrator and Professor Oak in the Pokémon anime. His ability to perform across different media and character types, from serious leaders to light-hearted sidekicks, has cemented his status as a highly respected and enduring figure in the Japanese voice acting world.
