Description
At twenty-nine, Satoru Fujinuma’s life has not turned out as he once hoped. A struggling manga artist living in a sparse Tokyo apartment, he works a dispiriting job delivering pizzas to make ends meet. What sets him apart is a strange and uncontrollable phenomenon he calls Revival. This ability spontaneously sends him back in time just a few minutes before a life-threatening accident is about to happen, giving him a fleeting chance to prevent disaster. Satoru experiences these leaps involuntarily, triggered by an unseen cue he alone can sense. His life takes a catastrophic turn when his mother, Sachiko, visits him from their hometown of Tomakomai City in Hokkaido. During her stay, she recognizes a man from a recently reported child kidnapping case, a detail that leads to her murder. Satoru arrives home to find her body and is quickly framed for the crime. As he flees from the police, desperate and confused, a powerful Revival activates, hurtling him not minutes, but eighteen years into the past.

Satoru awakens as a ten-year-old boy in 1988, back in his elementary school classroom in the snowy, industrial city of Tomakomai. He realizes that this is the year when a series of child disappearances and murders plagued his town, crimes that were never fully resolved. The first victim was his quiet and reclusive classmate, Kayo Hinazuki. Recognizing the connection, Satoru understands that to prevent his mother’s future death, he must stop the original killer by changing the past. As a child, but with the mind of an adult, Satoru reconnects with his childhood friends, the observant and clever Kenya Kobayashi, and the loyal Osamu and Kazu. He also meets a new classmate, the gentle and artistic Hiromi Sugita, who would later become one of the killer’s victims. Satoru’s mission focuses on saving Kayo, who lives in an abusive home, making her an easy and overlooked target. He uses his adult insight to befriend her and subtly gain the trust of his peers, creating a support system around Kayo that did not exist in the original timeline.

The narrative unfolds across two primary time periods. The majority of the story is set in the winter of 1988, where Satoru races against time to protect Kayo and uncover the identity of the true culprit hiding in plain sight within their community. This setting is defined by heavy snowfall, long school days, and the simple yet dangerous world of childhood. The other timeline is the original 2006 present, from which Satoru has vanished, leaving his young coworker and only friend, the steadfast and optimistic Airi Katagiri, to grapple with the fallout of his mother’s murder and his sudden disappearance. A significant narrative arc involves Satoru’s efforts to prove Kayo’s mother is abusing her and to find a safe place for her, culminating in a planned overnight trip to a deserted bus, a key event that will determine her survival. Another central arc concerns the friendship between Satoru and Kenya, whose sharp intelligence makes him a crucial, if sometimes suspicious, ally in the investigation.

The live-action television adaptation diverges from the earlier anime by fully incorporating the manga’s original epilogue. This allows the story to follow Satoru into a new, altered future after the climax in 1988, showing the long-term consequences of his actions and providing a more comprehensive resolution to the mystery. The series also develops the killer’s background, offering a more nuanced motivation tied to family abuse, contrasting with other adaptations that portray a more purely malevolent figure. Satoru’s relationship with his mother, Sachiko, is also given greater depth, highlighting her strength and intuition as a key element in solving the case. Ultimately, Satoru’s journey is a race to use his second chance not just to catch a murderer, but to restore the lives stolen from his friends and reclaim a future where he is no longer erased from the people who matter most.
