Yuko Kaida
Description
Yuko Kaida is a Japanese voice actress, stage actress, and narrator born on January 14, 1980, in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. She is affiliated with the talent agency Ken Production and has been active in the entertainment industry since her debut in 2000.
Kaida's interest in performance began during her time in her middle school drama club. To pursue this path, she enrolled in the Tokyo Media Academy, a vocational school for voice acting, and later refined her skills at School Duo, the training center affiliated with Ken Production. Alongside her voice acting training, she developed a strong appreciation for Shakespearean works and gained stage experience with the Shakespeare Theater Company. This background in theater has been a consistent complement to her voice work.
Her early career focused primarily on dubbing foreign films and dramas, a field in which she continues to be highly active. Her entry into anime came with minor roles in 2001, with her first significant anime character being Shimei Ryomou in the action series Ikki Tousen in 2003. This role helped establish her as a voice actress capable of portraying strong, composed female characters often involved in action.
Kaida's career is marked by a wide array of notable roles across various anime series. She is well known for her portrayal of the kunai-wielding ninja Tsukuyo in the long-running series Gintama, a role that has become a fan favorite. Her versatility is further demonstrated by characters such as the authoritative and emotionally complex Isabella, the "Mama" of Grace Field House in The Promised Neverland; the composed and capable spy Sylvia Sherwood in Spy×Family; and the villainous Flare in The Executioner and Her Way of Life. She has also taken on roles in numerous other series, including Agnes Joubert in Tiger & Bunny, Matsu in the Sengoku Basara franchise, Aiho Yomikawa in A Certain Scientific Index and its spin-offs, and Sae Niijima in Persona 5 the Animation. Her filmography also includes performances in Requiem of the Rose King as Jane Shore, Record of Grancrest War as Margaret Odeus, and Birdie Wing -Golf Girls' Story- as Seira Amawashi, among many others.
Beyond anime, Kaida is a prolific voice actress in video games and foreign language dubbing. She is the regular Japanese dub voice for several international actresses, including Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in the DC Extended Universe films, Michelle Rodriguez, and Emily Blunt. She is also well-known for voicing Claire Redfield in the Resident Evil game series and animated films, and Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider series.
In recognition of her exceptional work in foreign film and drama dubbing, Yuko Kaida received the Foreign Film/Drama Award at the 13th Seiyu Awards in 2019. This award highlights her significant contribution to bringing international characters and stories to Japanese audiences. She continues to be an active and respected figure in the voice acting community, also engaging in advocacy work for artists' rights alongside her peers.
