Juurouta Kosugi
Description
Juurouta Kosugi is a veteran Japanese voice actor, narrator, and singer born on December 19, 1957, in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan. He is affiliated with the Osawa talent agency and has been active in the industry since his debut in 1985.
Before entering the voice acting world, Kosugi graduated from the broadcasting department of Nihon University's College of Art and spent four years working as a sales coordinator at the Shochiku film company, where he was involved with the popular "Otoko wa Tsurai yo" (It's Tough Being a Man) film series. His entry into voice work came through a friend who asked him to narrate a commercial for a board game. This led to his discovery by Kazuo Osawa, who recruited him for the newly formed Osawa agency. For a period, Kosugi balanced his office job with his new career in narration and voice acting before committing to it full-time.
He made his anime debut in 1985 as Henken Bekkener in the seminal series "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam". Kosugi is renowned for his deep, resonant, and versatile voice, which allows him to portray a wide spectrum of characters, from mature and composed figures to cunning villains and even comedic roles. This versatility has led to a prolific career with hundreds of roles.
Kosugi's filmography includes many iconic and long-running characters. Among his most famous roles are Asuma Sarutobi in the global hit "Naruto" and its sequel "Naruto: Shippuden," the fish-man Arlong in "One Piece," and Inspector Isamu Kenmochi in "The Kindaichi Case Files" series, a role he has played for decades. He also voiced the stoic Jotaro Kujo in the original "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" OVA series. Other significant anime roles include Akio Ohtori in "Revolutionary Girl Utena," Lantis in "Magic Knight Rayearth," Akisame Koetsuji in "KenIchi the Mightiest Disciple," the Dragonar role of Mario Plato in "Kiko Senki Dragonar," Professor Clover in "Mysterious Joker," Joseph in "The Familiar of Zero: Rondo of Princesses," Taizō Kiritsubo in "Psychic Squad," and Yuuji Takashima in "Ginban Kaleidoscope".
In addition to anime, Kosugi is highly active in video games, most notably as the voice of the warlord Nobunaga Oda in the "Samurai Warriors" and "Warriors Orochi" series. He also has an extensive career in voice-over dubbing for foreign films and TV dramas. He is the primary Japanese dubbing voice for actors Daniel Craig (including as James Bond), David Duchovny (as Fox Mulder in "The X-Files"), and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, and has also dubbed for Andy Lau and Luke Perry.
Kosugi maintains a long-standing and well-known friendship with fellow voice actor Kenyu Horiuchi, who was his high school classmate. The two occasionally host a live talk event together called "Kenju Talk Live". Beyond acting, he has also pursued a music career since 2006, performing concerts and releasing albums.
