Description
"Date A Live" is a science fiction romantic comedy anime series set in a world where mysterious spatial quakes cause widespread destruction. These quakes are revealed to be caused by Spirits, ethereal beings from another dimension. To prevent further devastation, the organization Ratatoskr devises a unique strategy: rather than combat, the protagonist Shido Itsuka is tasked with making the Spirits fall in love with him to seal their powers and stabilize their existence in the human world.

Shido, an ordinary high school student, is chosen for this mission due to his ability to withstand the Spirits' immense energy. His sister, Kotori Itsuka, secretly commands Ratatoskr and provides guidance through an earpiece. The series follows Shido as he encounters various Spirits, each with distinct personalities and tragic backstories. Among them is Tohka Yatogami, the first Spirit Shido meets, who becomes central to the narrative. Other Spirits include Origami Tobiichi, a skilled combatant with a personal vendetta against Spirits, and Kurumi Tokisaki, a dangerous and enigmatic Spirit with a penchant for manipulation.

As Shido interacts with the Spirits, he learns about their struggles and the reasons they manifest in the human world. The series balances action, humor, and emotional depth, exploring themes of coexistence, identity, and the consequences of power. Shido's relationships with the Spirits evolve, often leading to romantic tension and moral dilemmas as he seeks to protect both humanity and the Spirits themselves.

The narrative progresses through multiple arcs, each focusing on a new Spirit and their integration into Shido's life. The overarching plot delves into the origins of the Spirits and the true nature of the spatial quakes, gradually revealing a larger conspiracy involving Ratatoskr, rival organizations, and the Spirits' connection to Shido's past. The series combines episodic storytelling with an overarching mystery, keeping the narrative engaging and dynamic.

Shido Itsuka receives an evacuation alert for a spatial quake and heads toward the epicenter to find his sister Kotori. He finds Kotori unharmed in a crater where a girl in ornate armor stands alone among destroyed buildings. The girl, identified as a Spirit, faces immediate attack from the Anti-Spirit Team (AST), a military unit using powered suits and directed energy weapons. Shido attempts to shield the girl from a blast but is intercepted by Kotori, who reveals herself as the commander of the airship Fraxinus. Kotori explains that Spirits cause spatial quakes upon arrival and that conventional weapons cannot eliminate them without catastrophic collateral damage. She presents the only alternative: make the Spirit fall in love and seal her powers through a kiss. Shido reluctantly agrees to this mission. He approaches the Spirit, who gives her name as Tohka Yatogami, and offers his lunch bento. Tohka, suspicious but hungry, accepts the food and begins to lower her defenses. The AST launches a second assault, and Shido physically blocks a shot aimed at Tohka, convincing her of his sincerity. Tohka teleports Shido away, repels the AST forces, and agrees to accompany him. Shido commits to his first date, understanding that its outcome will decide whether Tohka becomes an ally or a continued threat to the city.
2Close Encounter
Shido Itsuka brings Tohka Yatogami to a department store for their first date, aiming to make her fall in love and seal her spatial quake powers. Tohka, unfamiliar with human society, reacts with confusion and excitement to everyday items such as ice cream and a handheld game. The Anti-Spirit Team, led by the tsundere Ryouko Kusakabe, detects Tohka’s energy signature and launches an attack on the shopping district. Shido shields Tohka from gunfire, sustaining minor injuries and demonstrating his willingness to protect her despite her immense power. After the attack, Tohka retreats into a withdrawn state, blaming herself for the danger. Shido confronts her, insisting that her existence is not a burden and reaffirming his intent to continue their dates. The exchange softens Tohka’s resolve, and she agrees to give the relationship a genuine effort. Kotori Itsuka, Shido’s younger sister, reveals her role as the commander of the airship Fraxinus, directing operations to support Shido’s mission. The episode closes with the AST preparing more aggressive measures while Tohka begins to openly express affection, placing Shido’s task on clearer footing but under heightened threat.
3空の回廊
Yoshino transfers to Raizen High School and takes a seat next to Shido. Origami observes her closely and openly expresses hostility, leading to tense interactions in the classroom. During lunch, Yoshino struggles with chopsticks, and Shido helps her, which further provokes Origami. The AST detects a new spatial tremor, and Shido receives instructions from Ratatoskr to approach the new Spirit. He locates the Spirit, a small girl in a hooded cloak named Yoshino, who carries a rabbit hand puppet called Yoshinon. The AST launches an attack, but Shido shields Yoshino and convinces her to retreat with him. Inside the Ratatoskr base, the crew analyzes Yoshino’s profile and determines that she uses the puppet as a medium to speak and interact. Shido agrees to attempt sealing her power through a date. As he searches for her, Yoshino hides in a park, and Shido finds her after noticing the puppet. He invites her on a date, and she accepts, setting the stage for their time together. The episode ends with Shido preparing to meet Yoshino again, while Origami continues to monitor the situation and the AST remains on alert for further Spirit activity.
7Visitors from Overseas
Ellen Mira Mathers,a wizard from the DEM industry, arrives in Tengu City alongside her assistant to investigate spatial quakes. They set up a temporary base and deploy a high-output magical barrier that neutralizes a spatial quake before it fully forms. Shido Itsuka encounters Ellen near the Fraxinus command ship’s surface entrance and learns DEM specializes in capturing Spirits by force. Ellen locates Tohka Yatogami in the city and confronts her, displaying overwhelming combat capability with a CRT suit and a large energy blade. Tohka manifests Sandalphon to defend herself but struggles against Ellen’s superior speed and precision. Kotori Itsuka, acting as Fraxinus commander, orders a tactical retreat and deploys the ship’s real artillery to create a diversion. Shido intervenes directly, stepping between Ellen and Tohka to demand the attack stop. Ellen withdraws after receiving a communication from her headquarters, leaving Tohka shaken by her first true defeat. Shido realizes DEM poses a direct threat not just to Spirits but to his ability to seal them peacefully. Later, Kotori warns him that DEM’s arrival means the stakes have escalated beyond isolated Spirit encounters. The episode closes with Shido determined to strengthen his bonds with Tohka and the other Spirits before DEM makes its next move.
8Episode 8
Shido Itsuka arrives at Tengu City’s baseball stadium to meet the Yamai twins,Kaguya and Yuzuru. The two spirits demand that Shido settle their long-standing rivalry by competing in a series of games. Each twin intends to prove herself the superior sister through victories over Shido. Shido accepts the challenge because failing to seal their powers would leave the city exposed to spatial quakes. During a baseball match, both twins display their angelic powers, creating destructive plays that damage the stadium. The competition escalates when the twins insist on a cooking contest, where Shido must taste their dishes without favoring either. Tohka Yatogami and Origami Tobiichi observe from a distance, each preparing to intervene if Shido’s safety becomes compromised. The twins’ competitive drive shifts when they realize Shido’s genuine effort to treat them equally without picking a side. Kaguya and Yuzuru begin to question whether their rivalry holds the same meaning if a human can bridge their differences. Shido proposes a date with both simultaneously, forcing the twins to cooperate rather than compete. The episode ends with the twins accepting the joint date, setting the stage for Shido to navigate their conflicting expectations.
9What Is a Crazy Girl?
Shido Itsuka learns from Reine Murasame that Kurumi Tokisaki is a Spirit who has already killed over ten thousand people. Reine explains that Kurumi’s angel,Zafkiel, grants her control over time, allowing her to create clones and accelerate her own actions. Kurumi captures Tohka Yatogami, Origami Tobiichi, and the other students, then demands that Shido come alone to the school. Shido finds Kurumi waiting in the gymnasium, where she reveals her true goal: to use his sealing ability to replenish her time power and travel to the past. She intends to kill the first Spirit before the first spacequake, thereby erasing all Spirits from existence. Shido refuses to help her kill innocent people, but Kurumi dismisses his objection and attacks. Tohka breaks free and fights Kurumi, while Shido attempts to seal Kurumi by kissing her during the confusion. The seal fails because Kurumi does not open her heart to him; she instead mocks his naivety and escapes through a portal created by her clone. Afterward, Shido acknowledges that simply trying to seal Spirits without understanding them will not work against someone like Kurumi. Kotori Itsuka warns him that Kurumi remains at large and that her next move could come at any moment.
10Origami Master
Origami Tobiichi engages Shido Itsuka in a combat simulation to test his spiritual power usage. She defeats him repeatedly, using her AST training to exploit his lack of control over the Angel Zadkiel. Shido fails to land a single strike, and Origami offers him harsh feedback, emphasizing the gap between his current state and what is required to face real spirits. Kotori Itsuka observes and later privately reminds Origami that her personal grudge against spirits does not align with Fraxinus’s objectives. Origami insists on participating in the training regardless. Meanwhile, the Fraxinus crew detects a spatial quake near the city. The source is the spirit Miku Izayoi, who appears on a concert stage and uses her voice to mentally control a large audience. Shido, Kotori, and Reine Murasame analyze Miku’s ability: her singing compels obedience from anyone who hears it, and she harbors a deep hatred for men. Shido is designated as the negotiator despite the obvious risk. He approaches the concert venue but is immediately recognized as male and targeted. Miku commands the enthralled crowd to attack him. Shido evades the mob with help from Tohka Yatogami and Yoshino, who are unaffected because their spiritual powers provide resistance. The three retreat under fire from the controlled civilians. Miku declares her intent to eliminate all men from the city. Kotori revises the operation, ordering Shido to avoid direct exposure to Miku’s voice and to rely on Tohka and Yoshino for interference. The episode ends with Shido devising a plan to reach Miku without hearing her song, knowing that any misstep will turn the entire city against him.
11Countdown
Kurumi Tokisaki reveals her intention to consume Shido’s spiritual power by devouring him, abandoning her earlier pretense of romantic interest. She traps Shido in a temporal barrier where her angel, Zafkiel, grants her control over time. Tohka Yatogami breaks into the barrier after sensing Shido’s distress and engages Kurumi in direct combat. Kurumi uses Zafkiel’s abilities to accelerate her own movements and slow Tohka’s, consistently evading Tohka’s Sandalphon. Shido attempts to intervene but finds his sealing ability ineffective against Kurumi’s full spirit form. Kurumi explains her goal: she intends to travel back to the first spatial quake thirty years prior and eliminate the cause, believing that doing so will prevent all subsequent spirit disasters. She requires Shido’s power to achieve this, as his sealing ability can accumulate enough energy for her time-travel. Tohka releases her full astral dress and pushes Kurumi back with a sustained assault, forcing Kurumi to retreat temporarily. The battle leaves Shido confronted with Kurumi’s unyielding determination and the revelation that her actions stem from a personal crusade rather than malice. As Kurumi vanishes, a countdown display appears in the city, marking the time until a catastrophic spatial quake she set in motion. The episode concludes with Shido facing the immediate necessity of stopping Kurumi before the countdown reaches zero.
12Still - I Will...
Shido Itsuka reaches the center of the spacequake where Tohka Yatogami, transformed into an inverse Spirit, unleashes destructive energy. Kotori Itsuka, commanding the Fraxinus, coordinates the crew to create an opening for Shido to approach. Shido activates his sealing ability by accepting Tohka’s power directly, allowing her rampage to cease as he absorbs her corrupted energy. Tohka reverts to her original form, and the spatial distortion over Tengu City vanishes. Shido brings Tohka back to their residence, and the two resolve their earlier misunderstanding. The episode discloses that Kotori herself is a Spirit contracted with Ratatoskr, using her position to manage Shido’s mission while seeking a way to stabilize her own Spirit power. Shido agrees to seal Kotori’s power next, though the procedure involves risk due to its volatility. In the final scene, Kurumi Tokisaki contacts Kotori via communication device, revealing that she has been monitoring events and now turns her attention to Shido. Kurumi states her intention to meet him directly, establishing her as the next Spirit who will not cooperate with Ratatoskr’s peaceful approach.
