Description
Chise Hatori, a 15-year-old girl, is introduced as someone burdened by a tragic past, having endured neglect, abuse, and the loss of her family. Feeling isolated and without purpose, she sells herself into slavery, hoping to find a place where she belongs. At an auction, she is purchased by Elias Ainsworth, a mysterious, non-human mage with a skull-like head and antlered appearance. Elias takes her to his home in rural England, where he reveals his intention to make her his apprentice and eventual bride, as she possesses a rare ability as a Sleigh Beggy—a being with immense magical potential and a strong connection to the fae.
The narrative explores Chise’s journey as she adapts to her new life, learning about magic, the supernatural world, and her own abilities. Elias, though enigmatic and often distant, becomes a protective and guiding figure, helping her navigate the dangers of the magical realm. Their relationship evolves as Chise begins to heal from her past traumas, finding a sense of belonging and purpose. Alongside Elias, she encounters various magical beings, including fairies, dragons, and spirits, each with their own stories and challenges.
Key arcs include Chise’s encounters with the Church, which views her as a potential threat due to her powers, and her interactions with other mages, such as Lindel, a dragon caretaker, and Angelica, a sorceress who crafts magical tools. The series also delves into Elias’s mysterious origins and his struggles with his own identity, as he grapples with his inhuman nature and the complexities of his feelings for Chise.
Themes of loneliness, healing, and the search for identity are central to the story. Chise’s growth is marked by her increasing confidence and willingness to confront her past, while Elias learns to understand human emotions and relationships. The series balances episodic adventures with an overarching narrative, blending moments of warmth and humor with darker, more introspective elements. The world-building is rich, drawing from folklore and mythology to create a setting that feels both fantastical and grounded in its exploration of human and magical coexistence.
