Chiwa Saito
Description
Chiwa Saito is a renowned Japanese voice actress born on March 12, 1981, in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. She is affiliated with the talent agency I'm Enterprise. Her path to becoming a voice actor began with an unusual twist: she asked her mother to buy a fashion magazine, but her mother mistakenly purchased a voice actor magazine instead, sparking her interest in the profession. She began her training in July of her final year of high school at the Japan Narration Acting Institute and joined the I'm Enterprise-affiliated training group Voarêve the following January.
Saito made her debut in 2001, playing the lead role of Kokoro in the anime series Kokoro Library. Following this, she took a break of about a year and a half to focus on her studies. In 2002, she formed the voice actor unit "mix JUICE" with fellow voice actors Yūka Nanri, Rika Morinaga, and Mai Nakahara, though the group disbanded in 2003. A significant early milestone was her role as Lavie Head in the 2003 series Last Exile, a part she credits with deepening her approach to acting. The same year, her performances in R.O.D -THE TV- as Anita King and in Wandaba Style helped establish her reputation for playing "moe" (endearing) characters.
Throughout her extensive career, Chiwa Saito has brought a wide array of memorable characters to life. She is particularly well-known for her collaborations with director Akiyuki Shinbo, leading to her being dubbed a "Shinbo御用" (Shinbo's go-to) voice actor. Some of her most iconic roles under his direction include the sharp-tongued Hitagi Senjōgahara in the Monogatari series (starting with Bakemonogatari in 2009) and the time-leaping Homura Akemi in Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011). Her portrayal of Homura Akemi earned her the Newtype×Machi★Asobi Animation Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2011, with the character also winning the Female Character award that same year.
Her filmography is remarkably diverse, spanning numerous other major franchises. She voices Yona in Akatsuki no Yona, Chloe von Einzbern in the Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya series, and Aika S. Granzchesta in the Aria franchise. She has also taken on roles in long-running series such as Natsumi Hinata in Keroro Gunsō, Francesca Lucchini in Strike Witches, Aoi Asahina in the Danganronpa series, Subaru Nakajima in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS, and Riko Aida in Kuroko's Basketball. Beyond anime, her voice acting portfolio includes roles in video games, such as Jean in Genshin Impact and various incarnations of Tamamo-no-Mae in the Fate/EXTRA and Fate/Grand Order games.
Chiwa Saito's talent and versatility have made her a prominent and respected figure in the voice acting industry for over two decades, known for her ability to portray both萌 (moe) characters and those with a more complex, "腹黒" (calculating or sharp-tongued) edge.
