Sho Hayami
Description
Show Hayami is a veteran Japanese voice actor and singer born on August 2, 1958, in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. His real name is Yasushi Ōhama. He is married to fellow voice actor Rei Igarashi and is currently represented by the agency Rush Style, of which he is also the founder and representative director.
Hayami is renowned in the industry for his smooth, deep, and mature voice, a quality that has made him highly recognizable and sought-after for a wide array of characters. Throughout his extensive career, he has demonstrated a remarkable range, convincingly portraying both kind-hearted heroes and charismatic, often twisted, villains and sociopaths. His ability to convey both intense power and deep-seated suffering with subtle vocal inflections is considered a hallmark of his skill.
His career began after training with theatrical companies like Gekidan Seinenza and the Shiki Theatre Company. He transitioned to voice acting in 1980 after winning an amateur contest held by Nippon Broadcasting System. From the 1980s onwards, he built a formidable reputation with iconic roles in classic anime. Some of his earliest and most enduring characters include Maximilian Jenius in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Kei Katsuragi in The Super Dimension Century Orguss, and Burn Burnings in Aura Battler Dunbine. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he continued to land high-profile parts, such as the compassionate yet flawed Father Ewan Remington in Chrono Crusade, the stoic gunman Nicholas D. Wolfwood in Trigun, the complex Koji Nanjo in Zetsuai 1989, and the manipulative and calm antagonist Sōsuke Aizen in the long-running series Bleach.
In addition to the roles listed by the user, Hayami's filmography is vast and includes many other notable performances. He has voiced characters like Umibouzu in Gintama, Ichiya Vandalay Kotobuki in Fairy Tail, Franky Archer in Fullmetal Alchemist, Tokiomi Tōsaka in Fate/Zero, and the narrator for Radiant. He has also been a recurring presence in the Sengoku Basara franchise, voicing Akechi Mitsuhide, a role he has played across multiple series and films. His work is not limited to anime; he is also a prolific voice actor in video games, lending his distinctive voice to characters such as Woodrow Kelvin in Tales of Destiny, Jhin in the Japanese version of League of Legends, and various roles in the Super Robot Wars series.
His talent has been recognized within the industry. In 2019, he was a recipient of the Singing Award at the 13th Seiyu Awards as part of the voice actor rap project Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle-, where he voices the character Jakurai Jinguji. Beyond performing, Hayami has taken on a leadership role in the voice acting community by founding and presiding over the agency Rush Style in 2013.
Across a career spanning over four decades, Show Hayami has solidified his place as a legendary figure in the Japanese voice acting world. His distinctive vocal quality, combined with his profound versatility and longevity, has allowed him to continually captivate audiences, bringing an array of memorable characters to life across generations of anime.
