Kouichi Yamadera is a highly esteemed Japanese actor, voice actor (seiyū), narrator, and singer, celebrated for his exceptional versatility and prolific career. He was born on June 17, 1961, in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture. He is a graduate of the economics school at Tohoku Gakuin University. During his university years, he was a member of the rakugo club, an experience he credits as foundational to his professional success. Yamadera is currently affiliated with Across Entertainment.
Yamadera made his voice acting debut in 1985 with a role in the original video animation (OVA) Megazone 23. His first regular role in a television anime series came the following year in Bosco Adventure. His breakout role, and one of his first leading parts, was as the voice of Ryoga Hibiki in the popular series Ranma ½. In 1997, he became a host on the long-running TV Tokyo children's variety show Oha Suta, a position he held for nearly two decades.
Throughout his career, Yamadera has lent his voice to a vast array of iconic characters across anime, film, and video games. Some of his most renowned roles include the stoic bounty hunter Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop, the complex Togusa in the Ghost in the Shell franchise, and the mischievous Ryoji Kaji in Neon Genesis Evangelion. He has a long-standing association with the long-running Soreike! Anpanman series, most notably as the voice of the dog Cheese, as well as Kabao-kun and Kamameshidon. In 2011, he took on the esteemed role of Inspector Koichi Zenigata in the Lupin III series, succeeding the late Goro Naya. He also voices the God of Destruction Beerus in the Dragon Ball series, beginning with Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. The extensive list of roles provided by the user, which includes characters such as Jarvis in Pokémon the Movie: Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, Utsuro in Gintama, Kenshiro Kasumi in Fist of the Blue Sky Regenesis, and Professor Hershel Layton in Layton Mystery Tanteisha, demonstrates the remarkable breadth and volume of his work.
Yamadera is widely regarded for his extraordinary vocal range, which has earned him the nickname "the man with the seven-colored voice". He is known for his ability to portray a wide spectrum of characters, from heroic leads to comedic roles and even multiple distinct characters within a single work. For instance, in the video game Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, he voiced all five of the Monokuma Kubs. He has also been consistently voted by his peers as one of the most amazing people in their profession.
In addition to his work in anime, Yamadera is the official Japanese dubbing voice for numerous high-profile Hollywood actors, including Will Smith, Jim Carrey, and Eddie Murphy. His dubbing filmography is extensive, covering a wide range of actors such as Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Adam Sandler, and Idris Elba. For Disney, he is the official Japanese voice of Donald Duck, as well as the Genie from Aladdin and Stitch from Lilo & Stitch. His dubbing work is so highly regarded that Will Smith himself requested a live voiceover performance from Yamadera during a visit to Japan.
