Description
High school detective Shinichi Kudo is already famous for solving difficult cases with his sharp mind and love for Sherlock Holmes. This live-action drama series takes place mostly before the events that transform him into the child Conan Edogawa, serving as a prequel that explores his final days as a teenager. The first television special aired in 2006, and its success led to several more specials and a full thirteen-episode season in 2011. The series features two different sets of lead actors, with Shun Oguri as Shinichi in the earlier specials and Junpei Mizobata taking over the role for later episodes.
The story begins on a school trip when Shinichi receives a letter of challenge from someone calling themselves Kidnapper, threatening to abduct one of his classmates. What starts as a game of wits on a boat quickly escalates into a dangerous race against time when Shinichis friend Sonoko Suzuki vanishes, followed by Ran Mouri being locked in a room with a ticking bomb. Working alongside Ran’s father, the often bumbling private detective Kogoro Mouri, Shinichi must solve the kidnapper’s puzzles before it is too late. A later special brings in the shadowy Black Organization, the syndicate responsible for Shinichis eventual shrinking. In this story, a grown Shinichi appears alongside the childlike Shiho, the scientist who created the poison that transformed him, as they confront the agents who want them dead.
The serial drama that aired in 2011 presents a unique framing device. Shinichi, Ran, and Kogoro Mouri wake up trapped in a series of featureless white rooms. A mysterious captor forces them to recall past cases by presenting only a date and a single clue. With each room they escape, Shinichi must remember the details of a specific murder investigation, ranging from a locked room killing during a live television broadcast to a courtroom death that implicates Eri Kisaki, Ran’s mother and a brilliant lawyer. Other episodes involve a poisoning at a wedding reception, a death during a cabaret game, a kidnapping tied to a ramen chain inheritance, and a case where Ran herself appears to be the culprit. The season builds toward a dramatic conclusion in which Ran falls into a deathlike state, forcing Shinichi to race against time to identify the true mastermind behind their imprisonment and save her life before an autopsy begins.
The series maintains the core relationships that define the original story. Shinichi and Ran share an unspoken romantic tension, with Ran often frustrated by his obsessive dedication to detective work. Kogoro presents himself as a great investigator but consistently fails to solve cases without Shinichis hidden help. The supporting cast includes Ran’s wealthy best friend Sonoko Suzuki, the beleaguered Inspector Megure, and in the later specials, the Osaka-based detective Heiji Hattori, who challenges Shinichi to a rivalry of wits. The tone balances intricate locked-room mysteries and murder tricks with lighter moments, including Shinichis awkward attempts to hide his feelings and Kogoros fear of heights when climbing ladders during investigations.
